Pros

Excellent company culture. One of the few places I’ve worked where union and management actually work together. Different departments also work together well and the morale is generally quite high between sections. Senior operators are great at sharing knowledge and some take great pride in teaching new trainees. Having almost zero utility experience, I was able to learn a fair bit about the Ontario electrical grid. The diverse background experience of operators makes for some really interesting conversations. Great Top Rate Great Benefits Great Pension

Cons

Starting rate could be higher but seems fair. It’s a 6-8 year progression to top rate depending on previous experience. OPG pension is very selective of which pensions they’ll accept for reciprocal or buy-back transfer (Hydro-One, OMERS and a few others). Shift work isn’t for everyone. 12 hour shifts of day/night rotation of 6am-6pm or 6pm-6am. Ultimately this and the pension were my main reasons for leaving.
