Pros

Great place to work if you like to socialize with coworkers. Ping pong table is great if you like ping pong, I love ping pong. Interior design is open and makes you feel like you can reach out to your team or other teams. If you like 9-5 schedule, like the status quo, want to get along with everyone and don't have a strong desire to improve processes instead you want your manager to make all those decisions, you are the right fit.

Cons

CEO is profit driven, can't blame him, but this can and does have a negative effect in dealing with people. Low quality choices in picking managers. At least one team is 'clicky' which creates a negative vibe that spreads to other teams. Inclusivity is subtly discouraged from at least one team which creates a negative vibe that spreads...get the point? Working hard and going the extra mile is not properly recognized unless an inexperienced manager likes you. If you like to work hard and are very smart you will get frustrated eventually, it's up to you. For an inexperienced manager to like you, you need to laugh at all their jokes and say 'Yes' a lot. You need to be careful what you say if you don't like something bec it may not be properly translated to management.

This is valuable feedback and I think you are right. We are looking to create a work environment where people inspire others to excel. To achieve this, we need to ensure that every tier of management has leadership qualities. Over the past 12 months we have adjusted our hiring plans away from entry level, to hiring more senior employees. Some of these employees have exceptional experience to help junior managers develop. But employee development is a slow process, and sometimes you can’t beat the experience that comes with years of being a manager. Our shared services model creates areas of expertise in each function. Whilst we encourage teamwork, we also want collaboration across teams. Our old Naperville location was split between two main work areas and this made teamwork challenging. To address this, we have moved into new much larger offices in our Naperville location. We designed seating plans to ensure that relevant teams work together. We designed the footprint to ensure that there are numerous breakout rooms and a large kitchen/social area. We encourage ping-pong and foosball etc., and budget for out of hours’ social events. Profit is important for all companies, and is one of the main performance indicators for any CEO. But it depends what you want the profit for. To strip out of the company and pay dividends, or to reinvest into growth. We do the latter and you will have seen this with, new employees, new offices, new training programmes, compensation, social functions, and even the new ping pong table. We continually strive to improve and your feedback is essential for this to happen. I would value the opportunity to discuss these, and any future concerns directly with you if you would like. You know how to reach me! Thanks Robin.

Pros

The company has developed and maintained excellent internal tools, allowing for quick implementation of changes with minimal reliance on external vendors. Employees also have the opportunity to submit feedback and suggest improvements. Additionally, there are some genuinely nice people within the organization.

Cons

The company has implemented numerous changes that are not in the best interest of its employees. I've heard countless times that these changes are negative and that senior management seems to forget what made the company successful. A major shift has been the push for a full return to the office, despite previously promoting remote work and claiming commitment to it. The company is also striving to run the leanest teams possible, leading to burnout and frustration among employees. Additionally, Opus is prioritizing hiring overseas workers to cut costs, yet then expresses frustration with the resulting performance and work quality. Pay is low, and benefits are mediocre. What was once a great company has drastically changed for the worse as it has tried to expand.

Lots to unpack here but firstly thanks for taking the time to make the post. 1. You are mistaken about a 'full return to office'. On Jan 1, 2025 we instituted 2 days per month which seems very favourable compared to our peers. 2. For "running lean", in our industry sometimes overtime is needed. We proactively monitor overtime to ensure action is taken if recurring time exceeds 45 hours/week. 3. Overseas hiring. Opus has been a global company long before the Ireland office opened. We have always adopted a global operating platform. Given your stated preference to work from home, hopefully where someone sits, shouldnt be a big issue for you. 4. Pay and benefits are constantly monitored using 3rd party vendors to ensure we remain competitive. Thanks for the post and I appreciated your understanding as we try to juggle the best interests of all Opus stakeholders.
