Pros
I was recruited as a Primerica Insurance Representative which is an unsalaried position. Compensation is based on the number of insurance policies and products that you sell. You are in business for yourself, but you are not alone. Training is available on line and through media products for sale, and special workshops. Generally, company training for getting an insurance license is good and I was able to my own license. Promotions are based on your ability to make sales and obtain new recruits. High achievers are promoted quickly through the ranks.
Cons
You must get tested and licensed by the state certificated insurance board. This can be at your own expense and time. You must continuously be re-licensed with refresher training to maintain your license certification. The real issue to getting enough good clients and new recruits to establish your own business. You are continuously pressured to find new recruits and make sales. If a client cancels their insurance policy, the company takes back your commission (this is called a kick back). Some company representatives like to think of their company as a "Walmart of insurance policies, but consumers can shop and find cheaper polices in the marketplace. The company tries to get you to attend numerous "pep rallies" to keep your faith in staying with the company. Even these pep rallies are at your own expense and time. The company showcases millionaires that made it using their system and want you to believe that you can too. In reality, these examples are really the exception rather than the rule. Many do not make much money in the program and there is an large turnover quitting rate. The odds of success are low. The company recruits an average of 200,000 people per year and more than 80 percent drop out. If you are not business inclined and don't know how to continuously recruit new people and sell products then this job may not be for you.
