Pros

From an overarching perspective, the thing that makes work at Refinery most exciting is the people who run it - and I mean all employees - and the rapid pace at which the exchange of ideas and culture occurs amongst them. The brand truly reflects the character, interests, creativity, sense of humor, and taste level of its employees, as much in its external-facing product as in its internal operations. For young people looking to connect with their work, this consistency between internal culture and work product is hugely significant. Refinery is also an AMAZING, uniquely supportive and inspiring environment for professional women of all experience levels. Mentors abound, and even the youngest talent is characterized by intense and incredible originality.

Cons

Refinery's growth is a force to be reckoned with, and it requires constant adaptation and attention on behalf of all its employees. This is hardly a "bad," thing, however. The result is a thriving army full of entrepreneurs, each of whom is responsible for running her own micro-brand and looking out for its future. I love the sense of autonomy I enjoy in my work at Refinery, but I have to work hard to maintain it and keep up with it!

Pros

Refinery29 was training day, every day. The pace and creative expectations forced you to sharpen fast. I cut my teeth here over four years and came out a fundamentally better strategist. The work was culturally plugged in, the people were sharp, and you were trusted with real responsibility early. If you wanted to learn how brand, content, and audience intersect at speed, there was no better place.

Cons

The intensity that makes it a great training ground also means the environment runs hot. Not everyone thrives in that — and depending on your team, support structures varied. The company went through a lot of change during my time, which created some instability.
