1. Company- RoadRunner Recycling is a Waste Broker. They use fancy words like “Advisory Service” and “Consultants” but recycling is not their main focus. When they do recycle they mostly pickup cardboard/paper in a very small area of the Market. Only way they make money is by brokering rates, not actually recycling. RR uses Third-Party Contractors to pick-up the paper/cardboard. Being the “middle-man” does not make the sale easy to close as businesses would rather deal with the Waste Haulers directly. That puts the Account Executive in a very tough position because if you do save the businesses you visit money they could easily call their Waste Haulers and trade you.
2. Management- The worst part of this position! Inexperienced managers that either went to college together or grew up together that run this company. If they do promote then it’s “better” sales reps not real leaders to run the Market. Very micromanaging and controlling. All but one manger I met are on a power trip and some have insecure issues. Expect to answer calls/messages/email after hours and even on weekends. Will have surprise visits from Management to ride-along with you on your meetings. Always felt it wasn’t good enough and it always felt I as being watched. Poor Leadership!
3. Compensation and Quota -Base salary isn’t terrible especially if you are smart to negotiate more before accepting the offer. Commission is terrible! The quota for an Account Executive is extremely hard to hit and I think Management knows that. Commission structure isn’t very black and white. The compensation isn’t based around the work you actually do. It’s not for the experienced sales person that is used to making over 100k plus. Management will tell you on plan you can make over 100k and the commission is uncapped in the interview process but that is not realistic. For the time you put in and the work you do, you SHOULD get paid over 100k, especially when some deals you close are over $10,000 but you just get pennies in return. Just be aware that if you accept this position, you will probably be around 65-70k.
4. Lack of Communication/Miscommunication. Very, very big issue for this company. So many different departments that TRY to come together to make the process easy but that is not the case here. Lack of communication from managers, sales leaders, inside sales team, outside sales team, operations, the whole company! RR is only 4 years old but communication seems like it got worse as time went on and it should be the opposite. Operations team was a mess, which led to losing customer accounts.
All in all, just really consider accepting any offer and do your homework. Ask the right questions before making the move to work here. RoadRunner is not black and white in many aspects. Personally, I think they are waiting to be bought out by a Waste Hauler. Poor leadership, very high-turnover, and they don’t care about the growth of their employers because they don’t provide the support or resources to help.
