Pros
Benefits: Health, Dental, Life, etc. University life and activities, Tuition waiver (still have to pay hundreds in fees)
Cons
Pay is inadequate and misleading. For a division I university, SIUE definitely takes advantage of employee compesation. Some people have been there 10+ years and get paid nearly the same as someone who has been there for a year or less. Pay in general doesn't add up to what your sold in the job description and what you actually do. Many offices are short staffed and have individuals doing 2 different people's job. They tell you this amazing salary only for it to be before taxes, union dues if you do those, insurances and so on. You end up making less than a part time job elsewhere. They make students AND employees pay for parking even if you're parked literally outside the door of where you're supposed to be. A single semester pass is over $100. It's over $200 if you can afford to spend that money. They ticket employees (who work there and have to be there) for forgetting to buy temporary passes or not buying their ridiculously expensive lot passes. It's ridiculous to charge students for parking when they pay thousands in tuition but even more ludicrous to make employees who are literally working for the school for inadequate pay. All of this while some of the big wigs who are already making over $100K a year, get a $40K raises when the majority of employees (yes, full-timers and long timers) don't even make $40K a year. Don't waste your time here unless you can ride your bike, live close by, take on a second job or know someone who'll get you into a better paying department, otherwise they'll make you jump through a million hoops. They previously made you take exams for each job because their hiring is based on "merit". Now, they grade you on your past experience and give you a random grade out of 100 and that's what you have to dwell on while they pretend to consider you.
