Pros

For the basic amenities in Veterinary care, they do provide affordable preventative care for clients who are on a fixed income.

Cons

For starters, the structure of the SPCA is held up by the under paid, under appreciated staff that work themselves non stop every day to support the management and administration, for one simple reason, they love what they do. However, that comes with a heavy burden. The staff wages are absolute nonsense and raises do not exist due to not having the extra funds in the yearly budget. This budget is planned out the year ahead, which means, the administration and board of directors do not take into consideration the needs of the staff when considering a new yearly budget plan. Staff to them are just the doers, but what they don't understand is that without your staff.... you have nothing. New employees are thrown into the deep end with no training and no support. There is a hospital manager, a practice manager, and team leads, however if and when you actually need them, they are not available. The management team is usually in meetings and/or just have a closed door, which doesn't really matter, because they aren't actually educated in Veterinary medicine. They couldn't help restrain, pull blood, or tell you what an antibiotic is or what medication is used to treat pain. They use fear of write ups to keep staff in line and if you do make a mistake, you get repramanded immediately. The managers lead with fear, which makes the entire work place off balance. It is a very toxic, negative, and unsafe place to work for mental and emotional health. My advise to anyone considering an employment opportunity with the SPCA Florida is DON'T. I was my worse self the few years I was employed here and now that I'm free of all the negativity driven by management, I am a completly different person. This place will take you and turn you into a complete stranger to your friends and family, because it gets brought home with you. Fear driven, unsupportive, terrible pay, and attitudes galore.... this is what you will find at the SPCA.
