Pros

Competitive pay, excellent benefits, and no shortage of opportunity to make a difference. The company is huge on "giving back", as is evidenced by their annual efforts with the United Way, Day of Caring, etc. This family-owned privately-held company was founded on excellent principles and ethics 75 years ago, and it's endured and grown because of them. The company has an acquisitional and organic growth strategy, and is aggressive in its expectations. Hard work is valued, laziness is not. Open door policy with (middle and lower) management makes it easy to bring up concerns and issues (at least in my area of the company). There have been lots of improvements in the benefits offering in recent years as they have hired a dedicated VP of Benefits and grown that team. There is a lot to appreciate; the benefits package has tons of value, I think, and is very reasonable and competitive. There are regular team member (employee) appreciation and events to recognize hard work and major efforts (including occasional spot bonuses). Not important to me, but the dress code has relaxed in recent years at the HQ, which is really appreciated by some. Company has a very strong, conservative culture (not in the political sense, but the traditional sense), which you'll either really appreciate or you really won't - in which case you'll not be a good fit here no matter what. For me this is a strong positive. I've watched people who don't appreciate hard work ethic "spin out" of the system and am glad when that happens because it's like cutting an anchor loose from the team.

Cons

Executive team can be difficult to connect with, not as "present" among the lower levels. But this isn't necessarily unique to Savage. Company is growing and constantly re-organizing itself, which is GOOD, but also can create confusion and difficulty in adjusting to those org changes and their effect on business processes. Leadership do message the org changes out via email or powerpoint in a town hall setting, but it's sometimes hard to keep things straight. "If you don't like the org at Savage, wait six months" is a common joke. I suppose I'm listing this as a negative because there is opportunity here to improve how we communicate and prepare for org changes before they happen as opposed to finding out after-the-fact and having to tackle a ridiculous amount of sudden, unappreciated work to make sure the new changes are the least disruptive as possible. Sometimes you need to politically present an excellent idea in a way that management comes around to it as if it were their own idea, so that it gets traction and support. This is more a complaint against certain people in upper decision making positions as it is a generalization of upper management.
