SMI is one of the best state policy think tanks in the SPN network. As a researcher, you will enjoy a fair amount of latitude in shaping research programs,

unnecessary bureaucracy, overly politicized research program, intellectually dishonest publication process, and a lack of motivation to make SMI's research publicly relevant.
