Pros
The pay is good, but nothing you couldn’t get at any other tech company, that actually cares about how hard you are working. Your coworkers are smart, but equally over-worked. If you make it through the 18 interviews before getting hired, I’m so sorry. Really I am.
Cons
I’ve been at Skillz for enough time to be able to tell you to run, don’t walk away. From my first day at Skillz, I have worked non-stop, 12-13 hour days, 5 days a week. I have been asking to hire for my team for several months now and leadership has continued to come down with a no, despite obviously doing the work of 3. I know my direct manager is not to blame - the problem is that leadership just does not care about your mental health or well-being. To add insult to injury, Andrew Paradise retains so much control over every aspect of the company that it creates bottlenecks that make your job even harder to get done. That performance bonus you negotiated for? Don’t expect to come even close to getting it - they will give you a goal and make it next to impossible to achieve. Oh yeah, and on top of the 60-70 hour weeks you will be working, you have to play 1-2 hours of games every week. Literally, you have a quota. And no, it doesn’t matter how high up or how many hours you are working. Which means, if you’re like me, you’ll be having to get your games in during all the times you are supposed to be relaxing and recharging for the grueling week ahead. And if you don’t meet your game quota? You will need to do some ridiculous assignment like write a 250 word essay on how to make the games better. This is true even if no part of your job has anything to do with games at all (say, you were in finance). If you value your mental health and free time, do yourself a favor and run far from this company.
