Pros

Only a good place to work if you do program or social science work. Other than that, no pros.

Cons

This place has a terrible nonprofit administration team. The people in HR and finance management have been there for 20+ years, are rude, not progressive, do not understand the positive effects of growth, and do not listen to your feedback to make things better. There is no room for promotion or pay raises, despite the great value and effort entry/middle level employees put in. The first thing they tell you in your interviews is that the org has a HIGH TURNOVER RATE AND YOU SHOULDN'T EXPECT ANY ROOM FOR ADVANCEMENT. That should be enough to tell you how much they don't care about your professional growth, or even about you as a person. For an organization that boasts on being forward-thinking, it lacks the knowledge and understanding of innovative management techniques and of investing in its employees. Admin management is also low key racist and traditionalist. Your voice won't be heard here. Management makes decisions based on emotions and what would benefit them, not the team/organization. I worked here for over 3 years and did the work of my manager's and they never allowed me to move up once my manager left. Because management is scared of being replaced, they'd rather bring in incompetent temps so that you stay put and can't take their place. They'll pretend to say things like there is not enough money in the budget, but all the money goes towards the directors who don't know how to manage or communicate and are just their until they can retire. The Exec director only cares about her projects and the people who work for her. Unless you have an "in" with her, you're doomed to move anywhere or be seen/heard. Bottom line is - management feels obsolete and scared of being replaced, so they do whatever it takes to keep you at the bottom. This place lacks heart and soul and does not value its employees.

Pros

- Excellent PTO package - Good health insurance (but you have to pay into it) - Wonderful, smart, supportive colleagues, including many at the program-director level - Management makes an effort to contribute to staff professional development (occasional trainings + some professional development funds) and cohesiveness/wellbeing (outings, arts and crafts, parties, etc) - Very good organizational reputation to support your next steps

Cons

- Unrealistically low salaries for program assistants/associates living in New York City (unfortunately, even the best PTO can't make up for this if you’re trying to pay off loans or similar) - very few opportunities to network or learn from more senior colleagues outside your team - few opportunities for advancement, partly due to the structure of the organization
