Pros

1. Provide free snacks 2. It’s a newly set-up company in HK for APAC countries after the spin-off from its parent company, Bausch Health Companies Inc., which is a US-listed company. With a small employee size of less than 20, overall, the colleagues are generally nice and gentle. 3. It’s a challenge to work in a new set-up company as you can build up new workflows and procedures.

Cons

Fringe benefit not competitive -Staff below manager grade has less than 2 weeks of annual leave. Manager has two days more than lower grades. Additional annual leave is only granted after a few years of service. Inefficient and immature system Staff suffer from an inefficient and immature system that prolongs daily operations. As a result, they have to work late. (1) The existing system is not as user-friendly as other system, e.g. SAP. As a regional office managing multiple APAC countries, for example, if you run reports for 10 countries, you have to do it 10 times, whereas SAP can do it in one go. (2) The company outsourced the resolution of system errors and issues to external stakeholders. Due to the immature system, it has errors and issues that require you to seek assistance from these external stakeholders. However, staff suffer as they need to issue multiple tickets (multiple requests) to address the same issue, as the external stakeholders are incompetent and unable to resolve the issue in a single reply. Inappropriate and ineffective resources allocation - Workload is extremely different across departments. Some have sufficient manpower, while others do not. People in my team work overtime as all APAC countries (9, still have 1-2 to be launched) are handled by 2 persons while in other departments, 1 co-worker handles 1-3 countries only. Toxic person with unprofessional and destructive leadership - A toxic person in my department is unable to control her emotions. It is very common to hear her yell over the phone at outsourced stakeholders when she is unhappy with their performance. When they make a mistake, they may be scolded and insulted. She is also rude and abusive to other colleagues. - She is not helpful, unwilling to share information, claiming she is busy and suggesting you help yourself by searching for the answer on the server. I addressed this issue with my manager, expressing that it’s hard to move on under this work style, but surprisingly, she did not comment on whether the toxic person’s behavior was an issue. She just suggested me to find my own way to resolve the problem if someone is not helpful. Low team spirit, less and mess collaboration - I worked with an external stakeholder to align a standard procedure and then shared it with the team. However, the toxic colleague excluded me in the email distribution to the external stakeholders, with whom I had already communicated the standard procedures. As a result, the external stakeholder felt our company was disorganized because she thought the procedures had already been aligned with me, but another co-worker contacted her about the old process. I addressed this issue with my manager, expressing that it’s hard to move forward under these work practices and expecting a change in the near future. Surprisingly, she perceived it as a complaint and did not think it was an issue, commenting that I should find my own way to self-learn. Micro-management - You were criticized for not following up or providing assistance to your subordinate when he did not receive feedback after sending an email to a co-worker just two days ago. - You are expected to perform tasks the same day or the next day they are assigned; otherwise, you might be criticized for handling the task two days later. High turnover rate - Including me, there are only six staff members in the department. As a newly established company less than three years old, four people in my department have already left (included me). They attempted to recruit under different job titles, job roles or other ways to conceal that it was a replacement. Those who left, including myself, did so because of a toxic individual and an unreasonable management style. Think and make your own judgment. Unofficial, unprofessional and inappropriate exit process - I requested an official letter from my manager to verify my employment period. The manager replied that she would remind HR to send it to me by email only, and no physical copy would be available. However, I never received the email version. - No exit interview was arranged; the staff were only asked to exit quietly. They were suddenly asked to leave earlier than their notice period without any written confirmation, but only a verbal assurance that they would still receive their normal pay after their last day. Although staff eventually received their pay, it’s risky to work under this management style.
