Pros
- Good people at the employee level. - Good management in some areas, particularly where managers are new to Edison. - Job security as a monopolistic electric utility. - Very little budgetary stress because there is no profit/loss pressure. Every five years the General Rate Case is submitted... shave a little... and approved for rate hike. There is very little follow up or validation that the proposed budget was spent as intended. - Lots of best of breed and "gold plated" technology, because of the lack of budget pressure. - Many layers of management to reward the long time employees.
Cons
- 100 year old company. Old fashioned. Fat. Slow to change. - If the energy industry is ever de-regulated in Southern California, Edison will be in deep trouble. They cannot compete with the current management culture. - IT Management is out of touch with the business and the real world. Most of the business units within the company have little or no respect for the IT department. There are pockets of resistance where the business is creating their own technology and their own support staff. - Poor leadership in senior level positions. Especially in IT. - Gold plated technology bought at top dollar becomes "shelf-ware" - Management culture includes passive resistance all over the company... smile and nod approval in meetings, and then undercut behind closed doors. - Ethics and integrity are in short supply among senior managers and long term employees in the role of senior manager.
