Pros

Benefits - good medical, vision, dental plans. The illusion of work/life balance. Depending on the area within the company, the pay is ok.

Cons

This is for the Systems internet side. Management - The internet philosophy is to not trust your lead software engineers. They ave no software background and believe that they are the architects. Meeting deadlines and delivering a half-baked product are common. There has been a rise in firing employees to gain respect among their peers. This company is an insurance company and not a software company. New technologies are just thrown about and no control is used. Two products, essentially the same, will use few if any common components. No software process is encouraged and motivation, generally, includes being a stern talking (might include verbal abuse). If your physical workplace is not in Bloomington, expect to be left in the dark and blamed for program failures. Information hiding is a common place occurrence and is seen as a way to advance. Just try different browser on their site and see how many do not work.

Pros

(At the time) Fair pay and predictable bonus structure They were pretty good at covering travel expenses and paying them back quickly Diverse workforce & diversity initiatives Fun and funny coworkers Opportunities for growth Again, this was all four years ago and has likely changed

Cons

(At the time and now, according to other comments) Arrogant to a fault Total lack of innovation & willingness to innovate Odd attachment to the company's past (which prevents progress) High number of veterans (20+ years) who are determined to get that retirement money, and therefore, are resistant to change and technology Heavy reliance on command and control management style Poor decision-making that leads to losses of all kinds
