Overworked Compensation is variable. Some years you receive restricted stock units and some you don't. The managers will collect them yearly but the working force is only given it sometimes. You are not rewarded as much as management so it pays to become part of the heavy middle management. This makes the organization heavy in the middle & top and light on the bottom.
