Exploitative, worse pay ever, competitive environment for no reason. Evil, just evil.

Pros

Access to wonderful, high end art books and education is by far the best asset. Full time associates get great health benefits, and the occaisional fun event shakes things up. Aside from that very boring day-to-day operations for a brick and mortar store in a busy location, which can be good or bad depending on your priorities. The clients are also very interesting, and can provide good connections.

Cons

Tyrannical leadership trickles down from the top (Benedikt Taschen) through the ranks, all the way down to the lowly retail sales associates at stores who take not only the accumulated brunt of all the dissatisfaction and contempt coming from all levels above them, but also the literal heavy lifting. The amount of back breaking manual labor I did at this job was absurd, and for minimum wage and 2% commission, it just doesn't justify itself when the only real perk is (heavy, but beautiful) books. Communication is unclear across the board. My manager became overbearing, emotionally manipulative, and insisted on dressing me down in front of my colleagues in the name of efficiency. When I tried to call them out on it, I was fired without hesitation or confrontation within a week. Don't expect HR to solve your problems either, especially if you are in America, as the HR is stationed in Germany, and have no context or power. The company culture is cut-throat, especially regarding sales, with associates from every which way going out of their way to steal clients and commissions, and they do get away with it. Overall, no matter how hard you work in this company, it's never enough, and if you so much as do anything to bite the hand that feeds you, you will be cut down and terminated without remorse immediately. There is little opportunity for growth, and even if you can manage to move up in this company, at what cost? The financial gains are minimal, the connections are limited, and whatever skills you may strengthen are eventually all for nought when nobody is willing to change.
