Worked happily at The Dominion of Canada for 7 years, in two departments under five managers. It was close to home and my first "real" job after university. I made several life long friends during my tenure there. Some managers were excellent.

When a new manager was assigned to my unit the morale of the entire team went down hill. This person was known to be terse, abrasive and have unreasonable expectations. I'm not sure how he was promoted to a manager within the company, as all of the other managers had excellent people skills and knew how to motivate people and bring out the best in their staff. The "new" manager had people in tears that I'd never seen cry in 7 years.

Great work-life balance: the amount of work is never too much and very rarely have there been times I needed to come in weekends or stay after hours. My peers are very nice people and very likeable. Most people working here have been around for a long long time.

A large number of managers giving conflicting feedback, and way too many approval levels to get anything done on time. IT, and the company as a whole is very risk averse; and innovation is not encouraged.
