Pros

The best part of this role is getting to work directly with animals every day. It’s incredibly rewarding and gives a strong sense of purpose knowing your work is making a real difference. The team is another huge positive — you’re surrounded by like-minded, passionate people who genuinely care about animal welfare and the outcomes for each animal in care. There’s a really supportive, shared sense of mission which makes the work very meaningful. Coming from a long career in a different industry (marketing), this has been a really refreshing change. I genuinely look forward to coming to work each day and no longer experience that Sunday night dread, which says a lot. Overall, it has been the best career move I’ve made. Despite the challenges, the work is incredibly fulfilling, and I feel grateful to be part of something that has such a meaningful impact.

Cons

As with any animal welfare organisation, the work can be emotionally difficult at times. You do see sad situations, which can be hard. There are some limitations that come with being a not-for-profit, particularly around resources and capacity. That said, this is fairly standard for charity-based organisations and something you adapt to.
