Pros
Flexible hours and generally easy working with, many publicly funded projects, which are relaxed on budget and tolerant of waste of time and money. Campus has great facilities, and generally bright technical people around. They pay for professional membership and there are some other perks like 4 day work week, for example. Great company to start your career or join when established. Not the best for technical specialists and people who want to be rewarded for working hard as individuals.
Cons
It is not easy to get into the company, as hiring is based on technical ability and supposed or actual managerial experience (whichever applies). Of course this doesn't apply if you're a spouse of someone in middle management. Various prestigious titles, experience in big named companies and/or membership in professional organisations pretty much guarantee admission. This goes so far as you might as well bankrupt a big publicly seeded company to become a CEO here. Although nobody checks actual ability in anything and 'fail upwards' is very common. General progression is based on favouritism and, often non-disclosed, mentoring schemes with senior management. This moves barely sentient individuals, into positions of power and builds up bully mentality, arrogance and clear division between the management and the shop floor. MTC does pay competitive salaries especially compared to living costs around Coventry (at least when you first join the company). Once inside you barely get offered 1-3% annually and less than 10% on role change, unless you become a slave driver, which is a sought-after personal characteristic for a role in management caste. In many minds at the MTC everything is all about the ability to whip engineers to do project work and that ruined it for me.
