Pros

In the beginning, the people/family-feel atmosphere was the best thing about the business. Work-life balance is actually good for a recruitment business

Cons

Poor leadership team: A very clique-y team, lots of back-biting, gossiping (sometimes about personal issues of employees), and not a clue on how to handle things when they go wrong, instead, resorting to scapegoating and creating a blame-culture. Favouritism is the only way to get ahead! Some even being able to get promoted by just asking to be! Fake culture: Members of the leadership team and particularly MD are outwardly positive, and promise a lot of things to staff, however, actions speak louder than words, and what is said and what is done are two very different things. E.g. all members of company was promised the chance to apply for a promotion, but then opportunity was taken away with no sufficient explanation. Very misleading. Generally a gossipy culture, with no reprimands given to those who behave in an inappropriate way Dishonest and strategic: Upon her introduction to the business as the new MD, the business went downhill, with 20-30+ people leaving in a short space of time due to poorly orchestrated and dishonest strategies. It was clear that her goal was to rid the business of existing employees in order to create an entire new workforce and an entire new culture, and strip the business of its original values to create a money-making machine run by robots. When the culture changed, this deeply affected most of the employees (some even having to have time off due to this affecting them medically), and little care was given to their emotional wellbeing (it was gossiped about instead!) MD is obviously financially motivated and inwardly does not care about employees or about what she does to achieve business goals, no matter how it may affect the employees. Failed initiatives: The business is constantly bringing in new 'initiatives' and new ideas, but are quick to implement them without actually thinking about them. This creates a very unsettled atmosphere. The shift from using common sense to the unnecessary need to be overly process driven has been ridiculous. Salary: Does not reflect market rate, and employees never get their full bonus as there is always an excuse.

Managing Director: Thanks for your review, what a shame you still feel this way having moved on. I’m not sure when you left the business, we have some great new members of the leadership team and senior management team, including many promotions – all made on the merit of the individual and the great work they have delivered, Since I joined the business we have 16 promotions, 11 of which have been in the delivery team. Every one of those promotions has been down to the individual work and fantastic results each person has produced, none whatsoever on favouritism and I would hate the team to think we didn’t promote people on merit – we absolutely do! We have run a full external salary benchmarking exercise and brought the team to the level it should be at to make us competitive from a remuneration point of view. Our Talent team in particular has done some amazing work with me on employee engagement with lots of thoughts and ideas from the team implemented- from some outstanding employees of the month to planning for the Christmas party, new starter gifts and length of service treats – a real credit to the feel in all our offices now. Some of what you say in your review has a really serious underlying message which worries me. I am genuinely sorry that you didn’t voice your concerns over culture while you were with us. It concerns me so much that I’d really appreciate it if you could contact me so we can have a coffee and I can hear what it was like and make sure we have made real changes for the team- please do let me know when you can meet. I believe it feels like a more joined together business, with a great team (not all new) – as you rightly point out, we lost 11 people in our delivery team in Q4 2015 – some regretted leavers whom we would welcome back to have a conversation and see how the business feels now. The best people to answer how it feels now are the team – I’ll leave it to them to respond if they want to. We have a cracking client base and an even better team – who deliver some brilliant research and insight and take a real pride in what they do. Our business is our team and our people – and I am incredibly proud of every one of them! I look forward to hearing from you so we can meet up.

Pros

Great range of interesting clients and subsequently interesting projects to work on in many fields. Great mix of people, we are an extremely diverse team in terms of age, cultures and backgrounds which is very interesting to me on a personal level however is invaluable to our business and clients. We enjoy a very open and collaborative working environment from graduates through to the MD there is pretty much an open door policy, from business issues to personal development queries we are encouraged to consult with our peers/superiors. We have the security of a large business with the culture of a small business, we all know (and like) each other and are quite free to be innovative whilst working, with freedom to get involved in other areas of the business within WRC as well as our large parent company. We're in the middle of a period of change at the moment so I enjoy knowing my ideas could maybe have a real impact on how the business moves forward. Non typical for our sector we don't get forced to work all the hours in the day some of us do chose to work out of hours but generally get the time back when it is a little quieter in the office.

Cons

Traffic can be quite bad on Mondays so it can sometimes prove a long commute potentially missing a parking space which can be quite hard to find if the little high street is really busy.

Alison Ettridge - Really pleased that you are enjoying your time with us. The team is great – diverse, fun and really open for change and the impact they can have on the business. We have a great client base who are also equally committed to their project teams – a real testament to the people we have and the fantastic work they deliver. Re parking – I wish I had an immediate solution. Perhaps we could implement a car share? Or more flexible hours on a Monday particularly? Thank you also for your advice – please keep communicating what you want and need from us to be a happy engaged workforce – the door is always open! Thanks for the review :-)
