Pros

UNFPA does amazing work for women and girls - a lighthouse of gender equality. The people here are passionate about it. It is a little removed from the rest of the UN agencies - this is good because it's less structured and leaves room for innovation.

Cons

The lack of structure can also breed chaos. Your experience can vary widely from team to team. Lots of competition and infighting. Consultants are not treated as well as staff, which breeds a toxic unfair environment. Lack of career progression and lots of "stuck" people. That's common to the UN, i'm told.

Pros

Remote work, mission-driven, name recognition of the UN. Workload was not overwhelming, leading to good work-life balance.

Cons

The most disorganized organization I've ever worked for. Consultants were treated inhumanely - denied basic labor rights. Constant backbiting among team leaders pitted consultants against each other. Problems with incredibly easy solutions spiraled out of control due to the complete incompetency of leaders. Racist/colonialist mindset a major issue at HQ.
