Pros

UpShift is a decent opportunity if you're starting out. You learn a lot about organization, file management, and just "real-world" industry experience in general. The location is fairly central too, which gives you great opportunities to try different restaurants downtown.

Cons

It can be a hostile environment sometimes, with the owner. Quality work is expected, but the owner will be extremely rude and hostile with you over the most minuscule things (such as a hyphen in a file name or he doesn't like a font you're using). There is a high turnover rate (from both a number of people being let go after hired or quitting) which is not a good sign. There seems to be a lack of communication in their process as well. The owners are the ones present at meetings and in contact with clients yet they don't seem to know what's going on at times and get mad at the designers if they're not sure what's going on either. They have a good process in terms of researching concepts, but they will also copy a lot of work/inspiration they find on the internet and do not seem to have great integrity as designers. Overall the hostile environment from the owners, poor work culture, and lack of work/life balance does not make UpShift an enjoyable place to work.

I'm sorry you had a negative experience and I hope you found the right fit for your next job. It's not easy reading negative reviews but we listened, we learned and we grew as a result. SO thank you for your input. I built UpShift from literally nothing into the mid-sized, national agency it is today—perhaps my passion and love for this agency came across in the wrong ways. Wehen went through a tough patch a few years back when we were growing fast, adding employees who didn't quite have the skills they said they did, or who probably wanted a different kind of work environment. It was tough on all of us. But today, we have a consistent, friendly staff who all get along and do amazing work—they truly deserve the many logo, branding and web awards that we win. Again, sorry for your rough experience—and hope we can meet to discuss your experience openly and honestly some day so that UpShift (and me, personally) can continue to grow from the experience..

Pros

Getting a start in the creative industry in Chicago is tough. UpShift gave me an opportunity to work on logos and branding for buildings in downtown Chicago. Not many agencies hold a position in that market—and the payoff is so rewarding. It was out of my comfort zone and I felt overwhelmed at times—working there can feel like boot camp. But, there is nothing better than a good boot camp to get you prepared for the industry. Their turnover most likely reflects their ability to form polished designers looking for higher pay. I learned so much in so little time and felt like the art directors were really focused on making good work. A lot to learn from them about print design. This is a growing company and you should hang on for the ride.

Cons

UpShift is not for thin-skinned designers. That being said, neither is the creative industry. Art Directors are Art Directors because they worked their tails off to become so—and I made some of my best work under their guidance. Give designers a bit more autonomy in their workspace. They should definitely be a part of more client meetings at the agency, it helps to fill in gaps from the feedback.

Thank you for your input, both positive and negative. We learned a lot from what people said and we've made substantial changes. We went through a growth spurt a few years back and it was a tough transitional period for UpShift. Today, we have a consistent staff—many of whom are celebrating 3rd, 6th, ... 11th year anniversaries with us. We might work hard but have fun and also take pride in creating a really high-quality, strategically-driven product. There aren't too many agencies out there who do what we do. I'm proud of our team!
