Pros

PEEK is great. I don't think anybody in the science team thinks otherwise. Genuinely interesting material and of course makes money. On-site parking. Sharesave and pension are good, although double edged sword.

Cons

To summarise, extremely corporate company which appears to only retain stagnant careers through generous pension. I say this as somebody who went on to work at larger listed companies and the atmosphere is palpably different in a good way. In detail, the level of office politics was overbearing. I understand it's unavoidable, although you either went along with it fully or were ostracised for saying how ridiculous it all was. As a result, the culture became one which was not based on merit, but on random factors. Following on from that, it had a huge knock on effect where people saw new policies as an opportunity to climb their ladder. There was a huge focus on safety and a lot of the scientific team who weren't strong technically went from focussing on the chemistry to focussing on being safety-centric. People frequently got made to feel insane for pointing out the obvious. Being regaled with stories of colleagues who had been reprimanded through politics just because they weren't liked and everybody involved laughing about it made me feel quite uncomfortable. As with most middle-of-the-pack chemical companies set up in the middle of nowhere you end up retaining people who have stagnated and now can't leave as they have been outpaced by the job market. They buy into the office politics (because it'd be silly not to in a place you're going to stay) and everybody who doesn't buy into it gets pushed out regardless if they're valuable or not. The golden handcuffs of the pension contributions and the sharesave is a significant factor in retention rather than company culture and direction. A lot of previous reviews mention location being a hindrance to talent acquisition. Successful companies can set up anywhere and bring in the best. Struggling companies take what they can get and hope it works out.

Thank you for your detailed review and for your positive comments about our PEEK product and benefits. Given your short tenure you possibly didn’t benefit from Sharesave but thank you for commenting that it was a valued benefit. We’re sorry that you felt the ‘level of office politics was overbearing’ and made you feel ‘uncomfortable’. Our aim is to have an open, collaborative culture, with our core behaviours centred around doing the right thing and working together. As part of that, we encourage colleagues to openly raise concerns and grievances, where they feel negatively impacted by activities, events, people, behaviour and decisions. We’re sorry that you didn’t take advantage of that and felt the need to leave Victrex, as we could have investigated your concerns and taken actions to prevent them from recurring. In relation to some of the specific points you’ve raised, we make no excuse for safety being our number one priority. This will always be the case, whether in our manufacturing plants, laboratories or support functions. In relation to people, we’re proud of the contribution our employees make. As you’ve said, some are locally based and have been with Victrex for many years, but a significant proportion have joined in recent years and some work remotely a lot of the time, thanks to our flexible working policy. Together, we really value that diversity, balancing invaluable knowledge and experience with fresh ideas, as we continually improve the way we work and reward contribution with competitive pay and benefits.

Thank you for your really positive feedback and high rating – very much appreciated. It’s great to read that you agree about the good people we have working for us. Thanks for mentioning our products too, which bring about sustainable and transformational solutions across many industries, from aerospace, electronics and medical (to name just a few). We know how proud so many of our colleagues are about the societal and environmental benefits that our products help to bring about. We always strive to offer competitive pay and an excellent range of benefits. We regularly advertise vacancies across all of our different regions in Asia Pacific, Europe, the UK and the US. If you feel there are limited growth opportunities in your own area, please discuss your aspirations with your line manager, to see what support and guidance they can give you, in preparation for any opportunities that may arise. And we’d encourage you to make the most of your own personal development, taking advantage of our business LinkedIn resources, on-the-job learning, and opportunities to get involved in colleague-led activities such as our Employee Resource Groups, helping to improve diversity and inclusion across Victrex. Finally, if you have any specific ideas about improving leadership in your area of the business, or wider, please share these with the appropriate people or with your HR Partner. And whilst you can do this at any time, it’s always a good opportunity to share your thoughts when discussing the results of our Employee Experience Survey, where teams agree and prioritise improvements such as these. Thanks again for your really helpful feedback. We wish you every success with your career at Victrex.

Pros

only one I can think of is the HSA contribution

Cons

Top heavy, micro managers that do not coach or invest in their players. Look at turn over at Invibio last 2 years. Where there is smoke there's a fire!

Thank you for your review, and for sharing your view, particularly in relation to our HSA contributions for the health plan in the USA. It’s disappointing to hear your personal views, which are different to others' experience across Victrex and Invibio. Our highest scoring question in our 2024 Employee Experience Survey was in response to ‘I have a good relationship with my line manager’ at 84%, following an impressive 91% company-wide response rate. We acknowledge that there will be pockets where relationships may be different, and we always look to support line managers to develop their teams, and encourage individuals to seek support from their HR Partner if need be, we sincerely hope you did this whilst employed with us. We signal to all employees the standards we expect through our leadership competencies and core behaviours in place (including ‘continuously improving’). These form part of our regular performance feedback, check-ins and reviews. Finally, in relation to your last point about unconscious bias, we regularly run sessions for employees at every level, specifically targeted at helping people to understand, be aware of, and avoid unconscious bias. We’ve received positive feedback about these events, which we’ll continue to run. We’ve also established several global, employee-led Resource Groups covering race, ethnicity and cultural heritage, gender and disability, to increase allyship and awareness through targeted education and action.
