Pros

The role offered a high degree of autonomy and independence, with meaningful opportunities to learn new skills and grow professionally. Colleagues were highly capable, thoughtful, and collaborative, making day-to-day project work engaging and rewarding. Many team members were genuinely mission-driven and motivated by the impact of the work, which is not always common in the private sector.

Cons

Over time, the organization developed persistent challenges related to leadership practices and work–life balance. Although the company promoted an unlimited PTO policy, there were multiple instances in which approved time off was discouraged or challenged by management, creating uncertainty around expectations. Professional disagreements about work decisions at times became personal in tone, contributing to a culture where employees were hesitant to voice differing perspectives. Strategic direction from senior leadership was often unclear, particularly during periods when leadership focus appeared divided, resulting in inconsistent priorities and uncertainty about goals. Regular performance check-ins and structured goal reviews were limited, making it difficult to align work with longer-term objectives. Additionally, there were instances where compensation was delayed due to outstanding client contracts, which created financial stress for staff. While the experience provided valuable learning opportunities, the overall environment contributed to sustained stress and burnout.

Pros

Some of the most brilliant people I've had the privilege of working with. A sense of real contribution - a team that actually listens to each other, and cares about each other's success. An empathetic group that is always willing to help each other out. A flexible, open management style that cares about results, everyone fulfilling their own promises, and the big picture rather than micro-managing the minutia.

Cons

A value proposition that is difficult to communicate. Work is very challenging and will stretch your abilities. Small, scrapy team means you will wear many hats and have to think fast to "put out fires". For devs - legacy codebase very complex, making it challenging to refactor, write tests, and optimize. Do you take on if you are looking for easy work - this is a fast-paced, challenging position for those with plenty of self-discipline and drive.
