Pros
Everyone is really friendly (waves, says pleasantries, and tries to learn names.) Management makes sure you are properly trained to feel confident on the sales floor. The lunch break for an 8-9 hour shift is 1 hour which is really nice.
Cons
Personally, I got paid $15 an hour with only a 1% commission which is underpaid in my opinion. Part-time workers (I worked about 30 hours per week) only get 1 weekend off per month, although it is retail I suppose. Many departments are very competitive. To the best of my knowledge, the most competitive departments are Shoes and Men's Sportswear. However, I worked in Juniors, which is one of the most non-competitive. Don't apply if you don't think you can stand & walk for 5+ hours a day in dress shoes (you're not allowed to sit down during your shift.) The dress code is very strict, for example, women can only wear black slacks. The job description says, "fast-paced" because on the weekends, the environment is chaotic and stressful. Especially in my department, during HOCO and Prom season. However, during the week is typically fine. The program for the cash registers is extremely outdated and difficult to learn. They preach having a career at Von Maur but every corporate role requires relocation to Iowa.
