Pros

Solitude. Never saw my "boss", I think my closest field supervisor (who was more of a liaison than a boss) was somewhere a state away, I don't think I met him in the 3 years I was assigned to him. Just a few emails asking how I was doing. There's a few traveling QA folks, they drop in on you every few months for a handful of minutes. Your actual boss will live in Arkansas, you'll meet them your first week and likely never again. Gotta be self-motivated and have a wide knowledge base from copper, fiber, telco, cameras, and everything in between and outside. If you have the skills, it's a job that pays a full wage including as much overtime as you can handle, even OT for driving). About driving, you will be doing a lot of that, but they provide you a truck, and foot the fuel bill, so it's nice if you like podcasts, and working alone overnights frequestly, but honestly all hours day or night. Weekend work depends on where you are, I was in the southwest, so my hours were lower and I never did weekends. When I lived in a centrally located midwest state I did a lot of weekend work, but like I said, overtime is nice too. This was as a service tech. An install tech has a more structured schedule, that changes from every few weeks, to multiple months at the same job site. You will live in a hotel, and have steady work, quite often including overtime.

Cons

Well, it was fun while it lasted. The first whiff of covid and I was moved to part-time, lost benefits, and they took the vehicle. I got paid mileage to drive my own vehicle, unfortunately, even though I hung on for half a year, I managed about 5-10 hrs a week. Their goal was just to starve me out and avoid unemployment benefits, classy outfit all round. Don't say you didn't get a warning. If you decide to sign on as an install tech, get a prenup or just save time and go for the divorce. Your marriage will not endure unless she/he is willing to go live in hotels with you and sit alone while you work 50-60hrs a week. Admittedly, I have seen a few couples that did that, so, ymmv.

Pros

Tons of growth opportunity for people willing to invest in the company. My department has grown by 400% in the past 10 years. Lots of training provided. PM's are expected to have complete ownership of their projects.

Cons

Going through a digital transformation which should be good in the long term. Work life balance can be tough but it comes in waves.
