Thanks for your thoughts! I strongly feel that a mistake a lot of companies make is taking designers and developers and moving them out of that role into management as part of career progression. This is important to us because we're designers and developers ourselves. At thoughtbot, we are working hard to create an environment where that is not the case. Directors at thoughtbot still work on client work or our own internal projects, and set boundaries on their schedule to ensure that that still happens. We also have many opportunities to gain interest and experience in all aspects of the company and over time create product management and other positions for yourself. The fact that there is this open-ended capability can often seem like there isn't a path. We're actively working to provide better coaching to people so we can help them find the career trajectory that will work for them.
