Pros

- Flexible and remote work environment

Cons

My experience at eyeo as a high-performer letf me feeling undervalued and underpaid. Despite consistently going above and beyond, there was minimal acknowledgment or appreciation for my efforts. One aspect that stood out during my time at Eyeo was the lack of support from colleagues. I found myself in situations where I required assistance or guidance, but unfortunately, it was not available. Furthermore, it became apparent that some of my colleagues within my team lacked the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively contribute to their roles. As a result, I had to shoulder a greater workload and often found myself compensating for the deficiencies of others. There appears to be lack of motivation and energy among certain employees, as they exhibit minimal effort in familiarizing themselves with the readily availaible and straightforward guides that have been provided.

Dear former eyeonian, thank you so much for expressing your thoughts and feedback. We’re sorry to read that your overall experience was not positive. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, part of the HR team indeed resigned. However, the team is now fully staffed and working smoothly. Sometimes, changes need to occur for improvements to take place, which may not be ideal, but they often work out eventually. As of now, we believe that things have changed for the better. We also hope you have found a working space where you feel more motivated, receive the assistance you seek, and have challenging tasks, as we were unable to meet those expectations at that time.

A pretty rough environment

Pros

At eyeo, employees enjoy a wealth of perks, including a generous personal development budget, mental health coaching, and an annual week-long company retreat at a beautiful location (which recently got called off for 2024 because of cost-saving measures). One of the standout aspects of eyeo is its diverse and purpose-driven workforce. However, there has been a noticeable decline in this aspect since the new management took over in 2022. While eyeo's founders are renowned for their amiability, their reduced involvement in day-to-day operations, assuming supervisory board roles, has been felt within the company. On the bright side, the new Chief Product Officer brings a strong product vision to the table, coupled with innovative ideas that promise exciting prospects for the company. Additionally, the Chief Technology Officer fosters a positive atmosphere and genuinely prioritizes the well-being of employees, a skill that is notably lacking among the rest of the top management. Unfortunately, the demands from the CEO and other stakeholders seem to have taken a toll on her. She recently announced her departure, marking another sad moment in a series of bad news.

Cons

In 2023, a workers' council was established, signaling significant underlying issues within the company's internal dynamics and trust levels. Unfortunately, the relationship between the workers' council and management is strained, with management obviously adopting a strategy of intimidation and silencing. This became apparent, for instance, in the management's review of old expense reports, prompting questions about the management's true intentions behind this endeavor. There has been a noticeable stagnation in the company's growth, leaving me uncertain about what this means for me as an employee. The C-level executives openly acknowledge the stagnation and its financial implications, but their messaging is confusing. One week, it seems like many of us will be laid off due to financial constraints, and the next week, the message is much less dire. In the engineering department, the threat of layoffs feels somewhat less immediate. Since the new management took over in 2022, there has been a noticeable deterioration in the workplace atmosphere. Instances of reprimands by management in meetings have become distressingly common, blurring the line between constructive criticism and outright hostility. Many of my coworkers share such stories. The consistently poor and declining scores in employee surveys speak volumes. While it may be easy to attribute these declining scores solely to the recent transformation and layoffs, eyeo has undergone many such transformations since its establishment. Indeed, eyeo has been in a state of constant transformation since its inception. However, has any previous transformation been communicated as poorly, or has morale ever sunk as low as it has during the current one? The CEO's management style is characterized by a "my way or the highway" approach, with pressure and fear permeating throughout the organization. Additionally, some of his humor and language feel outdated and inappropriate, reminiscent of a bygone era. The CEO's speeches during all-hands meetings often come across as inauthentic, filled with meaningless managerial jargon, and lacking coherence. This frequently leads to awkward silence when he expects enthusiastic responses from employees. Moreover, the business results of his first two years at eyeo have been very underwhelming. Despite making lofty promises, he has delivered the weakest results since I started at eyeo, at least based on the information shared with us in all-hands meetings. The leader of the HR department seems focused on executing a clean-up job reminiscent of a finance or legal professional from an investment firm. Addressing the human needs of employees appears to be neither aligned with his personality nor his understanding of HR. Ironically, he then wonders why he is not well-liked and complains about the pushback from the organization. His lack of approachability and trustworthiness undermines the HR department's effectiveness in improving the workplace atmosphere. In fact, I view the HR leader as an amplifier and ambassador for the questionable behavior of top management.

Dear eyeonian, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences at eyeo. We value all feedback, both positive and negative, as it helps us improve as an organization. We’re glad to hear that you appreciate the perks offered at eyeo, such as the personal development budget, mental health coaching and our company retreats. The decision to pause the retreat in 2024 was not taken lightly and reflects our commitment to making responsible financial decisions while the organization is in the midst of a transformation. eyeo is making the biggest evolution of its history, shifting not only how it works but its strategy and operations while also acquiring companies which require integration. Change management of this sort is always difficult for any organization. Your concerns about the strained relationship between the workers' council and management as well as the broader issues of communication, trust and company morale are taken very seriously. We are actively working to improve these dynamics and foster a more open and respectful dialogue. As a note, the reviews of old expense reports were part of a broader effort to ensure financial transparency and responsibility but we understand how this might have been perceived differently and are committed to improving our communication around such initiatives. The concerns you’ve raised about workplace atmosphere and management style are troubling and we are committed to addressing them. We are also taking your feedback about our People department seriously. We’re aware that our recent transformations have been challenging and we’re striving to improve the way changes are communicated and implemented. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. We appreciate your candid advice and will share this feedback with the founders and leadership team. Thank you again for your feedback. We are committed to learning from it and making eyeo a better place for all our employees.

Pros

Remote work - Watching the financial drama unfold from the safety of our screens is like a suspense movie, minus the popcorn. Maybe a little more transparency could turn this thriller into a feel-good movie?

Cons

Lack of liquidity in the company. Termination of competent employees to maintain salaries of unnecessary managers in New York. Presence of managers who engage in bullying and show a lack of productivity.
