Pros

• Multicultural, multilingual environment with young, sociable staff. • Good as a first or second job after completing university studies, or as an entry-level credit analysis position.

Cons

• Very limited scope for progression due to there being no possibility of moving to roles outside of the Manchester Business Centre (unless you are on the graduate scheme). • MBC staff have fewer holidays than graduates or staff from other parts of the UK. • Salaries and morale are low, attrition is high and most teams are under-resourced. • Very little appreciation given for working beyond your assigned remit, for producing high quality work or for training others. Feelings of working in a biased and unmeritocratic environment are common. Favouritism is rife. • No funds for Christmas parties or other events. • Very limited development, mentoring or guidance provided by senior staff members. Work is often reviewed by staff with no meaningful prior experience or technical/analytical expertise. • Poor recruitment process leads to unsuitable external hires. Internal applications are often blocked and positions in other UK offices are not advertised to MBC staff. • Hardly any possibility of travelling abroad to broaden market knowledge or visiting other UK offices. • Very bureaucratic and inefficient processes. • Unsatisfactory management of underperforming staff. Little genuine interest in the ambitions of high performing staff. • Managers, especially those based in European offices, often fail to adhere to Ford Behaviours, which further worsens morale. • Some roles require long working hours, with no additional remuneration.

Pros

Good work life balance

Cons

Everyone has been in their job 20+ years it seems, and they will probably retire there, so there is no real sense of motivation or desire to change and improve things. New ideas or constructive criticism of old processes is sometimes acknowledged but always ignored by management. Given the fast pace at which the industry is changing, it makes me wonder if the company has what it takes to survive. In addition, because everyone knows one another from working together for such a long time, there is a lot of gossip and animosity, which creates a very unpleasant working environment. The company culture is also very hierarchical, everything revolves around management levels and salary grades, so it's really difficult to get exposure to senior management or make a difference in your role.
