Pros

Everything good has been stripped out of this company.

Cons

Just about everything now. There’s absolutely no atmosphere, everyone is so overworked and under rewarded that people are constantly at each others throats and different departments feel like they work for completely different companies. There’s no accountability when people can’t perform simple tasks or do their jobs effectively and upper management are bullies. The focus has shifted in the last two years from sustainability (there was never any in the first place and the waste that’s collected ends up at the same place as every other company) to making their new American investors cash. The C-suite team lied to everyone in the company about new investors being a positive thing and since they’ve come in it’s been to the detriment of the people that actually make the company the money. Employees are forced to work for borderline abusive customers with absolutely no welfare on hand whatsoever and then jokes are cracked from managers about how awful that customer is when they’re not the ones who deal with them on a ground level. Bonuses are an absolute joke and even in a sales role the company will do anything and everything they can to wriggle out of paying you, even if you hit/exceed your targets. Company progression is non-existent and good luck getting anyone, especially the COO, to actually listen to changes and improvements you need to make. Our CEO has ceded control of the company to the American investors and their self appointed CFO and in the process has lost his mind, berating employees for chatting, sending nonsensical messages that are impossible to decipher and accusing people of leaving early while also demanding they work overtime. Don’t even get me started on the ‘tech’. Nothing First Mile implements actually works and basic tasks are a challenge to complete because of how poorly everything is set up

Pros

You quickly become fluent in uncertainty and changes - not because the work is overly difficult, but because direction and mentorship are nonexistent. Endless opportunities to grow, particularly in patience, endurance, and the art of self-leadership when actual leadership is on an extended sabbatical (mentally). Horizontal business growth is here, but acquisitions are strategic on paper and experimental in practice. Your colleagues are excellent: smart, kind, and bonded by sense of “how did we all end up here”. The mission sounds inspiring, especially in presentations. Also looks great printed on greenwashed notebooks made from coffee cups (produced with no relation to First Mile's operations).

Cons

The prevailing leadership mantra appears to be something of "money first, people… negotiable. Environment? Who?”. Priorities rotate with impressive speed, sometimes faster than the moon cycle (which you notice staying overtime every night), often changing by the next meeting on Monday. Burnout is standard issue as business continuity relies less on internal planning and more on sustained confidence from american investors. Bullying disguised as a "high-pressure environment" is paired with a tendency to assign blame. But do not worry, you can escape it through generous annual leave (as many do). Salary reviews, promotions, and any career growth are stalled long enough to deserve a commemorative plaque at "About Us" webpage. Senior management visibility is largely ceremonial. Decisions are made, unmade, and then reassigned to someone who started last week. There is a lot of talk and noise about impact, values, and transformation... just not much evidence of them anymore in the daily work lives of those who make this place run.
