Revolving Door of "Leadership"

Pros

Compensation and benefits. Work/life balance depending on your role. Highly skilled employees at lower levels. New CEO who brings a new sense of passion and perspective - a PROVEN leader who can hopefully turn the ship around.

Cons

A string of different C-level management teams throughout the years has left the company with remnants of non-leaders in leadership positions. Culture is generally undefined, although we will soon have our 4th set of core values, mission statement, and value proposition in as many years. I think of the amazing leaders who have left FordDirect in the past few years that were pushed out by egos or because they wouldn't fall in line with those who were self-serving. We have lost so much. Do yourself a favor and look up where those ex-employees are now. They are thriving. They are pushing new ideas to those who will listen - or they have branched out on their own in order to execute a vision that FordDirect's "leaders" couldn't tolerate since it was not their idea. I have seen people rise through the ranks of FordDirect because they were willing to be the loudest person in the room - not necessarily the most informed, professional, or qualified. I have watched as the company has brought in outside talent to help move us forward, only to see that talent leave or, even worse, stay and drag down morale and culture. HR and previous management has done a terrible job of appointing the right people to lead. I am not saying that all of the leadership level is unfit, because I have had great experiences with some of them, but I will say that the majority of the team are in positions to lead people that they know nothing about, instructing them to complete tasks that they themselves know nothing about, and promoting their own position in the company by scooping up the worker bees ideas and touting them as their own triumphs. Then, those same leaders turn around and squabble with one another about ideas that they don't fully understand - simply to defend their own kingdoms that they have built within the company. HR is on an island - seemingly unable to put people in positions where they will fit or move employees up who have earned the right to grow into more prominent roles. Legal is run with an iron fist and won't listen to even its own constituents. I have personally heard Marketing berate employees and make them feel inadequate. Having Dealer Solutions, Partnerships, and Digital Strategy in the same room is bound to be a cat fight - and they don't seem to care who else is in the room or what collateral damage they cause. Finance, Tech, and Dealer Relations seem to me to be the only areas of the business where our leaders are leading. Dianne Craig has my attention and allegiance. She seems to be the most competent leader at FordDirect in many years. I hope she is able to dig into what the true culture of this company is and bring it to the leadership level. For far too long, highly intelligent people have simply been the shoulders on which people who desire titles and power have stood on. There is so much intellectual value here. It is time to stop worrying about being right and start worrying about being valuable to FMC and the Dealers.

Pros

Benefits, flexible schedule, good people on the Manager/Director level

Cons

FordDirect used to be full of talented and experienced people in the Tier 1 and Tier 3 space. Unfortunately they have all be run out of the company. Dianne, if you really want to know what's going on, go back and look at an old org chart and see who is left from the "old" management team. You will only find two names....... they have pushed their own agenda over the years telling the story that the others weren't experienced enough or didn't have the vision and got all those people removed from FD. Now take a look at the company financials and product road map. Where did all the profit go and what has successfully launched as a new product since all those people were forced out? Nothing....... failure after failure (you can't count the website relaunch as a new product). Those former executives were all very well respected by the employees and people worked their butts off for them and they are still respected in the industry because of what they accomplished at FordDirect. You wonder why everyone is running for the doors? It's because the current team that was brought in to replace them has not accomplished anything and people don't trust them.

A Review for Experienced Job Seekers

Pros

I've seen so many different descriptions of the place I work and frankly it's hard to recognize the place I come to every day in these comments. Without trying to reply to anonymous posts, I'm going to write to those of you who have spent a decade or more working in other places and want to know why coming to FordDirect is worth it. 1. You already deal with office politics in your current role. Guess what? FordDirect has office politics too. Sometimes people that shouldn't be promoted are promoted based on relationships. The horror! What impact does that have on you making at or above market wages, getting the best benefits in Detroit (including metrics that lead to actual bonuses), and working for one of the most stable segments in automotive (every Dealer has to sell cars)? None. You can stay at your current job and know where that's headed or you can come here, fill your time spent at work with, at worst, the same stuff you deal with now, and be more fulfilled financially and professionally. 2. Dianne Craig is one of the best CEOs in Detroit. Not only does she have tight relationships with Ford because she spent decades there but she didn't let it "corrupt" her. Does the CEO in your current company know your name and even pretend to care about you as a human being? Probably not. Dianne is an authentic, emotionally intelligent leader who rises above pressures to make sure we have a culture that she can be proud of. She is transparent and insists on regular communication and monthly Town Halls. That counts for something. Dianne alone is a reason to put FordDirect on your shortlist. 3. Recent changes have taken a lot of heat on Glassdoor, namely because people wanted to see their adversaries eliminated and many weren't. Why is this a "pro"? Because it shows that our company does not move with mob rule. Do you want to work at a place where enough people get frustrated with the changes you bring in and then try to eliminate you professionally and sometimes personally? Probably not. It may not be perfect here but there is an undercurrent of stability that many take for granted. 4. Final point. You may notice that we never have jobs available. It's not because this place is garbage or we're going through cuts. It's because no one ever leaves. Now why is that? Our attrition rate is likely one of the lowest in the area for full-time employees. Reading this site, you'd think FordDirect was an absolute nightmare with endless turnover. Our benefits and work/life balance make people really think twice about acting on their dissatisfaction and removing themselves. Most times they stay. That can be one of my cons because the poison continues to linger. But if you can rise above it, you will be happy you are here.

Cons

1. When I first started, criticized for my optimism. If you are looking for a new role, you know what "bad" looks like. You don't need to be reminded in your first week. Misery loves company. You have to be strong and resist it. 2. We are a small place that grew up pretty fast. There is overlap in some ways but if you are willing to find ways to make things better, you will be successful. Being a rational person who knows how to work others gets you far. 3. People who really need to leave and experience life in other companies never leave. They don't remember how things are out in the marketplace. There is a sense of entitlement / ingratitude that can be depressing if you let it affect you.
