Pros
There are many reasons why I state that working at GirlForward is my "dream job" and ultimate passion. Firstly, the girls are beyond amazing. They are talented, bright, generous, and compassionate--they make me proud every single day and have taught me more than I could ever teach them. The GirlForward girls are incredible writers, speakers, and leaders; and it is a true honor to be able to work with them and their families.
Secondly, I am surrounded by brilliant teammates who care deeply about the community and our mission. Whether they are full-time employees, interns, or volunteers, their dedication inspires me every day; I feel like through this job, I have met the most kindhearted people on earth. Very grateful to say that I also have the best bosses! I have worked in a lot of different sectors over the years, only have my supervisors at GF gone above and beyond. They are fantastic mentors and genuinely care about me as an employee and a human being.
Finally, the work itself: I truly have a lot of fun while working with the girls, mentors, and volunteers. Things can become heavy like it would at any other job, but I am able to find joy in many moments through interactions with girls, making connections with community members, and advocating for issues that I care deeply about. The mutual compassion, warmth, energy, and camaraderie that manifest within the community make even the toughest days beautiful and 100% worth it.
Cons
This kind of work is not for everyone. In order to be successful, one has to give the community 110% of their heart and soul and TRULY care about the girls. Putting in a half-hearted effort can lead to the work feeling overwhelming. Lack of initiative or lack of cultural humility can also lead to the same, so I recommend coming in with an open mind and sense of humor in order to find joy and success in the work!
