Pros
Family friendly company. Not only do they understand that people have lives outside of work, but my coworkers have become an extended family. They see how hard we work and bring play into the office culture, with company excursions and internal gatherings. When the economy slowed down in 2009 I had to leave, but I was happy to come back when it turned around a little over a year later. They work hard with outside consultants to make sure we as a team are communicating openly and fairly with each other and support us when we are in need on a business or personal level.
Cons
In our business there is a not so natural ebb and flow of business. Typically either buried in deadlines or looking for tasks with other teams to fill your time. If you need extra help you have to ask for it and hopefully someone will be available to jump on board. Being a smaller firm you often find yourself helping out on projects that you are not familiar with to meet a deadline that has moved due to forces outside your control. If you are not particularly comfortable with this industry and flexible with your skills and time you might sink versus swim. Some people who have worked here over the years may have been highly skilled but not in the ways needed. Ownership has a tendency to give them the benefit of the doubt and hold onto them longer than they maybe should have leaving others to pick up their short comings in a hope they will rise to the challenge. It is only an issue because we are a smaller firm and one nonperformer affects the overall team.
Pros
Collaboration with the purchasing department was educational, for a design firm there is a fair benefits package offered with full time employment.
Cons
Toxic work culture and poor leadership ability in design departments leads to long working hard but not smart hours, unclear communication within departments, cranking out budget projects with little creative opportunity. Unhealthy internal culture with no opportunity for growth or professional development.
