Pros

Always plenty of overtime available (due to constant staff turnover)

Cons

Pay barely above minimum wage, long shifts, compulsory overtime, shifts changed with as little as 24 hours notice, aggressive interrogation if you dare to be too ill to work, incompetent management who shift blame onto their subordinates, more red tape than you would ever believe possible (there is literally a form for everything - one for replacing jugs of water / juice, one for cleaning something, and for the lucky senior care staff, a form to confirm all the other forms have been signed!) resulting in more time spent pen pushing than actually caring for the residents, constantly short staffed due to high turnover of staff (the endless cycle of doom), formal investigation / disciplinary action taken for the most minor of oversights (e.g. forgetting to sign one of the aforementioned forms), no performance related bonuses (only a 'Kindness in Care' award for great performance, which means having your photo displayed in a nice little frame for a while), condescending and sarcastic management style that involves berating you in front of your colleagues and making you feel like you're at school again... I could go on forever, but if you're still insane enough to consider working for HC One after reading all of the above, the best of luck to you and don't forget to hand in your uniform when you inevitably leave.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts with us, and I am really sorry to learn that you are not enjoying your experience working with us. We are determined to provide quality care at every home and our dedicated and hardworking colleagues are the most important part of making that happen. Most of the feedback we’ve received from colleagues has been really positive. For example, 85% of nearly 5,000 home-based colleagues who took part in the most recent annual survey said they were ‘satisfied or very satisfied’ with their jobs and working at HC-One. However, it is also really important for us to learn from people like you and the feedback you’ve given us. I can let you know that we regularly review staff levels at each home to make sure we’re providing appropriate care for Residents. We are also working with the GMB Union to make sure that every colleague will earn above the national minimum wage. I know you’ve expressed frustration with red tape, but it’s also really important that we can demonstrate care provision that meets each Resident’s specific needs. I’m really sorry to hear your concerns about management. We’re introducing some new training and support programmes for some managers to help create good working relationships with staff teams and we never accept negative behaviour towards colleagues. If you are not comfortable speaking to your manager, please do get in touch with the regional HR or Operations Team, or you can go straight to the Chairman via askchai@hc-one.co.uk. Anything you say will be treated in total confidence. I do hope you will get in touch with us so that we can learn more about your specific experiences and work to address them. Alison

Pros

I can say that the nurses and carers here are the best in the country. True loving kind people. If your relatives are here, I can honestly say I have only ever seen tender, loving compassion and care. Don't worry, we love your relatives and value them above anything in the world. Nearest and dearest relatives. Please improve the care of your precious relation by saying how you appreciate the input of a carer or nurse. Please make a point of telling our managers when you find kindness in the carers and nurses. They always get to hear of complaints but sadly, they almost never hear praise for us. Unfortunately, they only speak to us when there is a complaint, never to praise.

Cons

I have worked here for over 2 years. I totally fail to star- rate this company because in over 35 years of nursing as an RMN, RNLD, it is the worst company I have ever worked for in all my life. I just can not give it one star. Home managers and deputies are some of the most incompetent psychopaths who were ever misfits in healthcare. Unprofessional management who threaten you with your job to back up their requests for relentless demands including their cartoonish e-learning - the off line activities are the most degrading. You get a "you can be suspended letter" with a pile of time-consuming, child-like exercises you have to complete, engaging your line manager as a superior (mummy) to authenticate you (child) as a healthcare professional. HC-One - GROW UP! A playground for management BULLIES! They, well.. they love bullying. It makes them feel less inadequate.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. I really appreciated hearing your positive experiences about the nurses and carers you work with, but I was really sorry to learn about your concerns. We do work very hard to make every home a great place to work for colleagues. Your hard work, and the work of your colleagues, makes a great difference to lives of the Residents we support. We are making a lot of positive progress and in our most recent annual independent staff survey, nearly 85% of colleagues who participated were ‘satisfied or very satisfied with their role and working for HC-One’. A similar number felt well supported by their manager. However, feedback from colleagues who are unhappy with parts of their job is also incredibly important to us, and we take this very seriously. While I understand you might not want to discuss your concerns directly with the manager, please do contact the regional HR or Operations teams, who are there to help. You can also contact the Chairman directly via askchai@hc-one.co.uk. I do hope you will get in touch so we can work with you to respond to your concerns. Alison

Pros

£6.36 a hour free uniform consists of a blazer only. Good carers and nurses

Cons

You work 12 hour long and short staffed shifts.I have worked 16 hours Staughton on a number of occasions there's also people who work 24 hours. Admin change your shifts when ever they feel like it and your expected to be free and get child care at the drop of a hat. Your touchstone training has to be done asap because if u fall behind and are bank staff they can take your hours off you. Training also has to be done on your own time. You will never get a thankyou for anything you do. .The management are bullies who know nothing about doing a 12 hr shift of caring with broken equipment no pads a pack of wipes between 16 residentsno soft diet options half a loaf of bread between 40 residents (2 floors). If you have children and have a meeting or taining your expected to bring them even with all the bugs and infections all the residents have. The management are BULLIES and have no problem threatening you with violence. If your ever heard being a bit short with any residents even the ones that shout and swear at you. Then expect you to jump to their tune there and then, even though you have 4 other residents buzzing. If you don't jump to there tune asap. They report you. You will never have any rights.

Thank you for your post. Your feedback is really important and I’m truly sorry to hear your concerns. We all know how important the hard work of dedicated staff members at our homes is – you make a huge difference to Residents every single day. That’s why we’ve made investing in colleagues such a priority since we took over from Southern Cross in 2011. We’re working hard to make sure that staffing levels meet Residents’ individual needs and we never condone short staffing or excessive shift lengths. Your feedback on training is also very important. We’ve had lots of positive responses about the HC-One Touch training programme, so I’m concerned to hear what you have to say. In our last two staff satisfaction surveys training has consistently been described as ‘the best thing HC-One has done for me’, but it’s really important that staff have the time to complete it at the right pace. This is an area the team and I will be reviewing. I’m also sorry to hear your concerns about the home management. We know that everyone needs effective support in new roles or in managing challenging situations, so we plan to launch a Leadership and Management programme very shortly to help with this. In the latest satisfaction survey, where nearly 5,000 home-level colleagues responded, nearly 85% were ‘satisfied or very satisfied’ with their job and working at HC-One. We do take all feedback very seriously and want to hear from you to find out how we can improve your experience. I realise you may not want to talk about this with your manager, but please do get in touch with the regional HR or Operations teams. We are all here to help. You can also get in direct contact with our Chairman via askchai@hc-one.co.uk. Alison
