Pros

OK reputation for tech investing in Europe.

Cons

Destroy companies they buy. Terrible owners. Do not know when to cut and when to invest. I feel bad for companies they buy and the people they fire without thought and have never seen such poor management of a portfolio. I realise layoffs are part of the pe investing process but they just don't know what they are doing and people are hurt as a result.

At Hg we have built our business by building businesses. This is our mission, and we have spent more than two decades growing more than one hundred technology companies, many of which have scaled to be 10x the size as when we first became a shareholder…and continuing to grow. We achieve this through a deep bond with our investee companies, where we provide considerable operational support for their development and bring a deep focus on responsibility, with recognition of our efforts towards wider business issues such as D&I and ESG – at Hg and also across our portfolio. Put simply, it is impossible to achieve this through a cost cutting strategy. This is not what we’re about and Hg sees consistent employee growth each year, most notably 17% growth in portfolio employees in the last 12 months, following a volatile period due to COVID-19. We have numerous examples of this contributions and these are readily available on our website or other social media feeds, so please explore hgcapital.com to see for yourselves.

Pros

Lots of money to throw at diligence and vendors. Can do many deals because they will pay the highest prices in auctions

Cons

Just throwing money at enterprise software with no idea how to value or run businesses. Infighting between US and European offices. A lot of politics. Treat you better if you went to Eton.

We respectfully disagree with these comments, which we think are unfounded. Hg has spent over 20 years focusing on investing in very specific end clusters of B2B software – building our knowledge and operational capabilities in this sector. The results of this focus speak for themselves. Hg has successfully scaled well over one hundred technology companies across Europe and North America and the performance of our recent funds put them in the very top echelons of the global rankings. The strength of these long term returns confirms that our willingness to invest in and develop the best businesses in our industry, works for our investors. More importantly, we’re also very proud of our culture which, underpinned by our values, has been core to our success over decades. We place huge emphasis internally on our inclusivity and our teams’ diversity. This inclusive culture attracts the very best executives - most of our 30 Partners have been with the business for more than a decade, coming from a wide range of backgrounds and building very successful, long-term careers at Hg Please feel free to approach any of the Hg partner group with your concerns – all of the above is incredibly important to the firm and we take any misgivings you have incredibly seriously.
