Pros

Still some good people around but the ones I know are looking to get out as fast as they can. I can still telecommute for one more week.

Cons

Used to be a great place to work until the current senior management group arrived. I am one of the several that are being laid off as the company is getting rid of telecommuters. Working remotely in the US is apparently bad but they are building a center in India so working on the other side of the planet is apparently good. Half of our development team is being let go and our management team is finding out just how far below market value Highmark is paying as they are trying to find people to replace us. Senior management is completely clueless as to how this will impact business. Other developers have already resigned or are actively looking as they know all of the work will be dumped on them. Benefits are so-so at best. Normally, a company gives employees discounts on products it produces. Highmark "produces" insurance but I don't see where they employees get any better deal than any one else. Working weekends and 50 hours or more during the work week will almost guarantee you will need that health insurance at some point.

Pros

Great medical, dental and vision benefits. 401K's performance is outstanding. Public Relations, Government Affairs, Community Affairs and Foundation teams are the best. The Caring Place has helped thousands! Employee volunteer spirit and philanthropy is incredible (United Way, Highmark Walk - but volunteering through Highmark is now only possible for salaried employees). Davis Vision, UC Dental, and HM Insurance Group are the best companies to work for under the Highmark umbrella. There are many unsung heroes that give their best to put the customer first. More career opportunities for IT, IT Security, and Project Management talent.

Cons

Promotes wellness and importance of health but the majority of employees are unable to live a healthy lifestyle. Work life balance is not possible. Great mission, vision, and values statements but 10-12 hour days are the norm. Your work life plays out in your head 24x7. Volume and scope of work is beyond manageable for most. Under prior executive leadership, employees felt like they wanted to work long hours because they were part of a team, making a difference, and truly were dedicate to serving the customer. They could voice concerns and offer feedback along with management 360 reviews. Leaders were called on the carpet for bad behavior and actually put into programs/trained to improve and grow their skills. That is no longer the case, especially at HM Health Solutions. If you report to a toxic manager or other senior executive, management or HR will not be there to assist you. Since leaving Highmark, I've regained my health and well-being but it's taken many months to recover!

Pros

There are some remnants of the company the people tell me it once was, mainly in what they still do for the community - such as the work with the Caring Place foundation. Most of my direct coworkers were professional, hard working individuals. Can wear jeans with a United Way donation. There is a gym, that no one in IT really ever gets a chance to use.

Cons

This review is for the IT side (HM Health Solutions) of the business which is an absolute mess. I personally, was lied to about the job I was given, and in my case it was a real bait and switch, which made me go back to my old place of employment as quick as they would let me return. As other reviewers have stated, the place is a mess of redundant processes that do nothing but add work to an already overburdened staff. Many in management refuse to make any real decisions despite staff begging for them to do something or make the decision - as a result work gets delayed. Honest communication among departments and the business/customers is non-existent and almost toxic when it does occur. The only thing you hear from the higher ups is them blaming other areas or their staff and also deciding on another useless process or reorganization (which happens every 6 months or so). This makes it hard to work with the customer's best interest in mind and creates a very low staff morale. Departments are defensive with one another and thus walls in communication are built. The few good managers or directors are so miserable that they leave along with the staff.
