The 32+ year startup company and its pitfalls...

Pros

There are actually a few rare gems hidden amongst all the bad apples at this company. Aside from a few good coworkers, there wasn't a lot of positive about it.

Cons

Middle management is a joke. No one makes any moves without executive authority, so there's almost no point in having them aside from their enactment as a buffer to lower level staff. Executive management is like having Trump in office. They've got blinders on and only see what their delusional eyes want to. You can forget about what the employees and numbers tell you, they'll believe what they think. The bias is out of control. The quiet ones get abused because they don't cry too much and those who cry the loudest get awarded to keep their mouths shut. The key is not making waves and sweeping as much as possible under the rug so no one has to do anymore than they absolutely have to. If you're a favorite for whatever reason, you're golden. But if you just work hard you can expect to get rewarded with more work and little to no recognition or monetary compensation. This place is known to run great employees into the ground.

Pros

- Good stepping stone company for newly out of school graduates. - Co-workers are generally good people put into a bad environment. - Most of our clients are good people and generally have fair expectations.

Cons

Where do I start? I won't get into the salary/benefits because people are aware of what they are accepting when taking an offer. - The mid-level management are constantly waging war against each other and there is no sense of camaraderie across departments. - When things go wrong, the top priority is figuring out who to blame and establish as the scapegoat. Next, gather your evidence so that said scapegoat cannot pin the blame back on you (since upper management always like to figure out whodunit). Fixing the problem is a distant concern that may be addressed. - Sales and account managers attack the employees to the point you'd think they were unsatisfied customers. Some of the emails I've seen are very aggressive and serve only to stir up tension. To an extent, I do understand their frustration since they are the outlet of our clients but I don't believe they handle the situations correctly. - Upper management seems to care more about establishing good "feng shui" than having happy employees. We sacrificed one of our annual company BBQs so that they could build an ugly green patio thing that is supposed to "redirect energy flow" back to the company. - The company is not scaling the workforce to keep up with the growing demands of the clientele. Work is constantly increasing and department sizes are staying the same. This naturally creates slower response times and frustrating workloads. Final Advice: To be successful at this company you have to lose your humility and compassion. If you are the type of person who cares about your co-workers or your clients, you will not get far before getting beaten down.
