Pros

- Camaraderie with coworkers; “at least we suffer together” mentality with close peers;

Cons

Product & Leadership - Leadership team is willing to lie about what the product can do, how many customers it has, and how much money they make to hire candidates, gain new customers, and keep the board happy. - The product is literally a bunch of custom python rules on top of OCR’d text from open source OCR providers; Very concerning ego-driven CEO behavior with no motivation to change or grow. - CEO has said there aren’t enough women in senior positions out there to be considered and hired into senior roles and leadership positions at Instabase; - CEO said that George Floyd’s murder was a political event and that he wouldn’t denounce racism in the US; this had a lot of backlash and then he reverted his statement, wrote a blog post about it, then blamed his behavior on his upbringing in India and lack of education on systemic racism in the US; - CEO is very conflict avoidant and an irrational competitive person which results in him saying yes to every customer request and the Instabase engineering and product teams then scramble to build one off, single use, random products with no future use; Work/Life Balance and Compensation - Lower than industry standards for compensation and benefits - this has made it very hard to recruit engineering talent; - Very high churn with employees and customers; +10% of the ~100 person company has left in the first 3 months of 2021; customers continue to downsize their spend with Instabase; - Raises happen non-transparently/promotions are never celebrated publicly. You have to guess what you need to do to get a raise or promotion (which seems to be working 80 hrs/week or more)

Pros

- Really brilliant people, the best at what they do - Another review mentioned the "at least we suffer together" mentality. This is unfortunate, but it helps - Product has evolved quickly to almost meet market demands - Salary is relatively nice, stock options can be good depending on what position you're going for - Some Fridays are turned into company holidays - Promising names in upper management, coming from MSFT, FB, MongoDB, etc - Good funding, might go somewhere if more sales come in - Typical start up perks: free lunches, snacks, happy hours, etc

Cons

- Work life balance is hard to achieve: 1. Many managers work while being sick (pressuring employees to do the same), others will schedule meetings well outside of work hours (6 AM - 10 PM), or they will ping employees on days off 2. Working through the night/on weekends and holidays, working until you're physically ill, and over-working in general is glamorized and rewarded - Stressful and hostile culture at times. Upper management inappropriately yells at their employees - There are some female leads in the engineering department, but besides that racial diversity is especially low - Referral culture is heavy (and can be good), but it has now lead to a homogenous workforce with little room for creativity - Difficult to hire and retain good engineers

Pros

- Customers are generally impressed with refiner 5 the first time they see it - Strong initial adoption from largest finserv institutions (see public press releases) - top tier investors - interesting people from predominately academia backgrounds

Cons

- "Everyday is an adventure" because each day is unknown and there is no cohesive vision from leadership - Company is struggling to reconcile with the difference between a great vision and the strategy/execution behind it - no real identity - First time founder/CEO - Product is a swiss army knife - you try to be all things to all people and suddenly you're nothing to anyone - Team members working long hours to meet marquee client demands - Palantir-like consulting model behind tech - Precious eng time is spent doing customizations for largest clients rather than furthering product vision - Highly competitive space including big cloud players - trying to differentiate from RPA vs intelligent doc processing vs legacy doc mgmt platforms vs google/microsoft is challenging - Software subscriptions are $$$$$ - Carta like culture with survival of the fittest mentality lead by the Chief Strategy Officer - Main automation use cases (eliminating paper-pushing) are drying up as banks build digital first a la plaid, socure, etc. - Significant employee turnover in last 6 months
