Pros

Disclaimer about the 3 positive reviews at time of writing: 1 is from the CEO/Founder (that's allowed??) and the other 2 are from part-time coaches in their first month of work (honeymoon period). John, the CEO, also asked me for a review within my first 2/3 months of work, and may have asked them too, the early timing of which felt inappropriate + Genuinely good mission and people genuinely passionate about it + Genuinely good product that can give genuine results and that some clients really love + Still the early days, so bound to go down, but an actually unheard of retention rate, especially in fitness + Both affordable and sticks, unlike most fitness options For full-time folks in-house: + New office space is nice and the company that’s renting it out is fun + Snacks might be paid for. This is pretty much the only benefit, however + You may or may not have health insurance that will likely be only partially paid for + You might be able to take a few days off every year + Flexible-ish hours. Or whatever that means when pulling 60+ hour weeks + You won't work *every* holiday, only most For coaches: + Work from home + Relatively flexible hours (have to be appropriate for client, but maybe will have scheduled messages in the future too) + Earn money in down-time between in-person clients. Or take on enough to do Kudos full-time (not yet possible, but once there are enough clients on Kudos. potentially earn more in the same time, but tbd) + Get to train more clients in the same period of time + Train clients for a longer duration; months to years + In-house team listening and working to make the coach software keep getting better over time - making your job easier and you more efficient (which translates to earning more for the same amount of time) + Intelligence / AI to partially automate tedious and/or repetitive things + You don't have to see John everyday and don't have to experience his abuse remotely as much as the in-house team, if at all Honestly, I would probably still be using/paying for and advocating for the product if the CEO, John, hadn’t been so abusive to me. It’s genuinely a shame. Instead I get nauseous even thinking about this company.

STAY VERY FAR AWAY unless you enjoy working long hours, nights, & weekends (60+ hour weeks) for little pay and 0 benefits only to get BERATED whenever you want to take time off
Despite having a handful of bad experiences, this is my first 1-star review and was actually thinking ~2-stars. But then John continued his abuse by falsely disputing my unemployment claim even after firing me without cause, warning, or severance. Now I’d prefer to give negative stars Absurd things John has *actually* said: - “$4k / month is plenty!” - pre-tax! in SF! the most expensive city in the country! where studio rent can top $3.3k! where $100k qualifies for HUD benefits! - “I would earn so much more than you!” - no one asked you, mr. superiority complex. and since when is market rate for biz “so much” higher than engineers? - “Then don’t take a day off!” - all hell goes loose if you ever take time off; it’s not like John can wait a day to make important decisions! - “Why should I pay more for insurance?” - even 1 benefit is too many - imagine, caring about employees’ health! - “There are consequences to vacation” - it’s not a vacation if there are consequences - “You want me to pay taxes now!?” - how dare I ask to be tax-compliant, esp. when it’s my personal taxes John throwing temper tantrums: - “What do you want me to do about it!?” - ah yes, we all know how powerless CEOs are - “I can’t promise I won’t blow up again” - asking your boss to not take stress out on you is too much to ask for - “I guess it’s ‘attack John’ time now!” - As they say, “feedback isn’t a gift, it’s an act of war!” - “Do whatever you want!”, “Fine!”, “You can quit!”, “I’m not perfect!”, “That’s sooo helpful”, etc John lying / deceiving / misleading: - “Sign where it says Lead Engineer” - no, you hired me as VP, per your job post and what we discussed - “When we hire more engineers, they wouldn’t report to you, right?” - what??? that’s exactly what they’d be doing and what we discussed. I’ve led many teams and have exponentially more start-up experience than John, yet this is what he pulls?! - “Of course I want you to get what you want out of this role” - why try to take away my management responsibility when I literally was not interested otherwise?? - “We will fundraise as soon as I hire this VP. We’ll hire engineers immediately after. Here’s my plan” - John did not fundraise and kept unilaterally changing plans - “Goals aren’t meant to be hit” - riiight, convenient excuse for failing to hit revenue / growth goals by a 10x margin after saying it was easily doable - “I’m not pressuring you! It would just make it easier on my budget if you deferred salary [beyond contract]” - 🤨 - “I’m a big believer in feedback”, “I want to improve” - why claim you’re being “attacked”? why only in-person? - “I believe in minimum vacation”, “Of course you should be able to take time off”, “I care about work/life-balance” - why pressure me to not take time off? why repeatedly berate me for it? - “I value empathy and care about teammates” - why all of the above??? John also: - Lied to unemployment multiple times on why he fired me. Lying to a government agency is a **felony** - Told them I “didn’t show up for work” when I took an *approved* day off after working 13+ hours the day before - Even If it were true, would constitute unlawful termination under CA Labor Code 1198.3: retaliatory firing for refusal to work >40 hours More Abuse: - Yells / blows up at you in public, in front of a client at a gym, in an open office, and during your vacation & holidays like New Years - Says “I regret that”, but will not apologize - Will only ever apologize if you get **extremely** angry or upset - After berating you repeatedly, will then thank you and admit you were right More Hypocrisy: - Often makes unilateral decisions, even when so drastic they violate your contract and have massive impact on your finances - Expects and pressures you to agree, even when you're visibly uncomfortable - The *instant* you even make the smallest decision on your own, even if he agrees and literally told you to “involve [him] less” and “push back more”, he will immediately & vehemently berate you for "being disrespectful" More on Self-Awareness: - Plays the victim constantly, despite being CEO: has total control and is able and **willing** to fire you at any moment - Completely ignores subtle nudges, complaints, suggestions, etc regardless of how many times you repeat them - When you finally bring it up in a 1-on-1, will claim he’s being attacked - Comments like “realize your position” go completely over his head I try to live life without regrets, but I sincerely regret working here, sacrificing and putting up with so much, just to get shown the door, not even given a severance package, and even have my unemployment claim falsely disputed. I sincerely hope I never have to see such an awful person again. I wish the char limit were longer so more people wouldn’t have to go through the abuse I did

I first want to thank the reviewer for the work he did to help Kudos get off the ground. Clearly, it was not a good cultural fit, but he made a significant contribution to helping us fulfill our dream of helping millions of people get healthier. Nothing can take that away. He is a brilliant and passionate fighter for what he believes in, and that’s why we hired him. We just did not work well together. He and I invested countless hours in weekly 1-on-1s trying to work through things. We were a pre-funded startup trying to go from nothing to something, and it was stressful. Kudos has ultimately been successful, but it was stressful nonetheless. After ~4 months of working together, it just stopped working entirely. The statements in the review are taken out of context (or are simply untrue) and do not reflect Kudos’ or my values at all. We definitely worked hard - as a pre-funded startup trying to get off the ground and then raise money we had to - and the reviewer worked damn hard and seemed to believe in the mission. I tried to be effusive in my gratitude for the effort. I’m passionate about building Kudos into the force for good that we know it can be, but work-life balance, humility, empathy, and thoughtfulness are critical values that we look for in every candidate and which we demand from ourselves. Me most of all. Although the reviewer and I did not work well together, his experience is not representative. I can provide hundreds of references of former (and current) colleagues and teammates who have had a completely opposite experience in working with me. My current CTO asked me to include his email here so he could vouch for what it is like to work with me (connor@kudos.fit). I do focus on feedback and growth and am working with an executive coach to continually improve. I think all startup CEOs should. And I learned a lot from the reviewer and from the unfortunate experience we had in working together. I wish him nothing but the best. Pyramid scheme of fitness.

Pros

You can create your own schedule which is great and the a.i workouts are helpful.

Cons

Its basically the pyramid scheme of fitness working with them. Your pay level has 'tiers' (which is wrong) and if a client cancels, you get marked down for it. Even if you have nothing to do with their cancelation. I had a few members financially struggle and yet i got bumped down pay tiers. Not to mention, the pay is extremely low for the amount of work you put in. Working for this company was really bad for my mental health for the amount of time i put in and the $300 a month i received.

Thank you for the feedback. I am sorry to hear about the stress and the struggles you mentioned. I understand the frustration with clients who churn despite your best efforts - it's happened to me! We are working to prevent it on numerous fronts by improving the client experience. We are in no way a pyramid scheme. We are in no way a multi level marketing organization. We pay coaches directly for the work they do and that is all. We do have demanding expectations for coaching quality but we're committed to helping coaches succeed as much as possible. Don't let them suck you in

Pros

None, I did not get any help what so ever getting clients even after jumping though all hoops they asked me too.

Cons

-software is clunky -you have to get all your own clients despite them saying other wise -my manger would just end chats on zero notice and then not respond for hours or days -If you don't have a huge social media presents you might as well not show up -it's more of a sales job than training job -They keep 70% of the money from clients -You get moved up and down sales charts

I hate to hear you've had a bad experience starting out as a coach on Kickoff. I understand it is frustrating when you work hard to get trial clients going and then we do our audit and tell you you're not ready to enter our marketplace (and start getting dozens of clients we recruit) yet. But at the end of the day, we have to ensure you're able and ready to delight clients in our unique context - we will not compromise on that until you show you can excel. It is not in anyone's best interest to ramp up coaches who are not quite ready. Our online context is unique and takes some getting used to. That said, if you take the feedback and put it to use, we will ramp you up. Showing improvement is actually an even better sign that you'll excel than getting things right the first time! I suspect you may already have entered our marketplace by now if you're still training with us. I encourage you to focus on delighting your clients, and I promise if you do that, you'll join the ranks of our hundreds of coaches who are earning incredible pay for very reasonable, flexible hours and changing the lives of dozens of clients at one time. -John Gardner, CEO john@trainwithkickoff.com
