Zendesk essentially shortchanged its employees on stock options. When they acquired Klaus, they fully compensated contractors with stock options to minimize their tax liability, as capital gains tax rates are lower. However, employees with traditional contracts received their compensation primarily as salary, resulting in them losing more than half of the potential value of their stock options payout.
