      Summer school teacher

      Pros

      Got paid on time and enjoyed some of the shenanigans. Plenty of fresh air and good weather!

      Cons

      Far too much work to be done,which is to say we were understaffed, and deliberately so. Salary was not commensurate with the amount of work expected, and promises that were made at interview were not honoured. Best avoided, I would say, as there are much better employers out there.

      I am very sorry to read your comments. It is true that summer schools require hard work and it is not for everyone. However, we do not deliberately understaff our centres. We are subject to compliance both legal and from the accreditation body. There are isolated instances when we lose a staff member or two and cannot replace immediately, requiring the team to pitch in and ensure the safety of our students, especially as they are minors. I believe our salaries are similar to competitors but it is regrettable that you were made promises at interview that were not kept. As the person responsible for the summer schools programme, I have personally reviewed the interview questions, along with what is actually offered, so we are not guilty of that in the future. We wish you well for the future.

      Pros

      The students and the other teachers were wonderful and I liked the teaching materials a lot. The school is in a good location.

      Cons

      This school is under new management so things were a little chaotic and the role of each member of the management was often unclear. This made it confusing to know who to go to when I had a question, sometimes they wouldn’t be able to answer my question, at other times I would get an unhelpful, rude and surly response. When I had a meeting with management they interrupted me and argued with me when I tried to express some concerns. This school did not have any staff meetings or teacher development at all during the time that I worked there. The absence of staff meetings meant that there was little communication about things that I needed to know to do my job. I was quite disappointed to see that the school was not committed to staff development, after a cursory training I started teaching, I was never observed and given feedback on my teaching, nor was I allowed to observe another teacher’s class, so I just relied on my own training and experience to prepare and teach my classes.

      It is the case that the Boston school has now closed. It is true that there was some lack of clarity at the start of the takeover of the existing school but this was resolved some months after and the general feedback we received from teachers and students alike, up until the closure was very positive.

      The students are the only thing that make this job great. Pay is also above average for a camp counselor position.

      Cons

      Management is disorganized, unhelpful, and constantly confused.

      We have had a major restructure within the head office management of the summer schools and I would hope that staff will have a positive experience in 2020. Our staff feedback, on the whole for the summer of 2019 was positive, and we are looking at over 100 staff returning for July and August.
