Pros

Plenty of work, great tools and software, good software training, very good self branding. Great place for internships and those new in your career.

Cons

Each office is run independently, with seemingly only financial oversight from the board, leading to great variations in office culture. There are a lot of principals and associate principals. There was a lot of politics, self promotion , and a very obvious glass ceiling. Because of the lack of corporate oversight into culture and daily life in each office, the culture can vary widely. If you want to work there for a long time, get to know the office and studio leaders and other employees at that location, before you interview. HR.

Southern Company

Pros

This firm has a lot of positives. They are genuinely interested in doing good things. however, it is important to realize that if you are coming from a multinational company, you will struggle here on a number of dimensions. The first leadership, then compensation (which was updated in 2022 but not nearly enough) and everything that comes with generalizations of the South. I’ll let you fill in those blanks. People were genteel, kind to your face. They offer food often during lunch and learns. The company takes employees on walking tours in the Charleston office which is greatly appreciated by all to get to know the city and architecture. what’s missing from these walks and luncheon learns is the honest truth about what is happening to development and properties on the peninsula. That entire region is at threat of being underwater, but nothing was ever mentioned.

Cons

Old-fashioned hierarchy. White males paid higher than everyone else, you will see wide disparity between them and females/minorities. I believe they want to change, but maybe not as ready as they think they are for that. It will take time. In the meantime they may lose great people.

Pros

LS3P has some incredible talent. There are great technical leaders and a few good designers. They have managed to recruit some wonderful young people as well.

Cons

The leadership here is antiquated and backwards. There is a significant disparity between the managing principles of the firm, and the young people they are bringing in. A vast majority of the middle level mentors and architects have left because of this lack of agile leadership, and far better pay elsewhere. While offering competitive salaries from the start, LS3P is known for stagnating even extremely talented people, and trusting the young employees will not talk about it. We do. Every other architecture firm in Charlotte is offering overtime pay for employees not in positions of leadership - LS3P should be too, to place value on the amount of overworking so many here do. There is virtually no investment in design innovation, firmwide.
