Cons

Landmark Cinemas has an amazing ability to penny pinch in every imaginable scenario. Problems are always band-aided as the cheapest "fix" is always chosen. For years I was instructed to inform guests, unhappy about the quality of seats, that they were on the way! I said this to the same customers for over four years. I recently heard that new seats will not be coming to the theatre for the foreseeable future. That is extremely disappointing as the current seats have been in use for twenty years. The seats are one of many examples of outdated equipment. Landmark's Head Office in Calgary is a cesspit of condescending, gas-lighting and generally uncaring people. They make management at theatre-level feel like an inconvenience when support is required. Human resources is a joke. Their "investigations" into workplace misconduct are often fruitless and their only worry is whether or not the company will be sued. Landmark Cinemas will do the bare minimum for you. This is most evident in their wages. I actually wasn't even going to leave this review.. until I saw how proud they were to offer a "$2 premium on provincial minimum wage" for assistant managers. It is a complete joke that Landmark considers $2 more than minimum wage is enough for assistant managers to be solely responsible for hundreds of customers + a crew of high school aged employees, late working hours (often later than 1:00 AM), working Christmas and other holidays, having time-off denied because coverage is unavailable and performing first aid duties. A $2 premium on minimum wage provides you with the responsibility to deal with unhoused drug addicts and other undesirables. The lobby bathrooms are a hotbed for drug use as they are the closest bathrooms to the bus exchange. Have fun cleaning up the bodily fluids yourself when your minimum wage staff rightly don't want to do it. If you're really unlucky, you'll even get to save someone's life and have all three emergency services show up! In six years at Landmark Cinemas, I saw one co-worker get a raise that wasn't related to promotion or an increase in legislated minimum wage. My co-worker had to fight for months and threaten to quit to receive a measly raise. Their starting salary for full-time positions is not livable and you will NEVER be able to save money while working here. The hiring/interview process is something I have experience on both sides of. If you seem like a decent kid looking for their first job, you're hired. Once hired, your free-time will be confused with your availability. They have a "minimum availability" requirement that will ensure you don't get weekends off. When employees decide that the work load, availability requirements and wages aren't on the same playing field... they quit. Then corporate gets upset with the theatre management because it's our fault their poverty wages and treatment of employees is so poor. They really would pay everyone less if they could. Don't underestimate how much drama an almost exclusively teenage workforce brings to the place. Furthermore, the dating culture of the workplace is disgusting. Over my six years there, I witnessed management fraternize with employees and on multiple occasions turn into romantic relationships whether after or before the cast level quit. This is alarming on multiple levels, as assistants are in a direct supervisory position and usually older than cast. It doesn't take long before you realize it isn't a professional work environment at all.
