Pros

Employee discount is 40 % off full price, 20% off clearance also good at other stores in the Acena company umbrella . Approximately once a month discount is 50% off for a " fashion week / Sopie's closet" for employees. The store also gives out products on the learn-to-earn , or wear-it weekend for product or marketing launches. They also have the Passport to fashion quarterly with different deals and product learn to earns. Hours are somewhat flexible. They will work around school schedules/ availability . Fun coworkers that become a second family.

Cons

Mixed bag in managers. Some are professional and great to work with, others are emotional basket cases ,or cliquish, unprofessional, " mean girls" types. Training is patchy, there are never enough hours given for proper training at the sales associate or managerial levels. Technologically, the store is behind, at least the district I work in . The registers and computer were installed in 2005 and should have been replaced years ago. This level of obsolescence causes continual , nagging daily problems ,affecting both associates, management, and customer service. Sales goals include credit card sales. If you don't sign people up for credit cards, you may not get scheduled for work hours. The management gets a lot of paperwork to read( in between customers and tasking -which is when exactly?) formulae for figuring if they get any extra hours for the store which is hard to understand in the first place and sometimes impossible to actually be able to do if the company won't send all the information ( bills of lading, ship to stores, etc. so that the information can be fed into the equation), and growth goals. Our stores former DM kept changing her focus for growth and improvement, such as sales goal, credit card goal, or how many items per transaction. Then she would change the focus the next week without stating that there was a new goal in place , if we did achieve a goal it was frequently ignored and unacknowledged. Payroll system is difficult , and hard to access information that should be accessible . New hires were being given a load able card and told that it was not replacible if they lost it or rehired in at a later date. My pay stubs are no longer sent to me or at the store for pickup. Supposedly they are online accessible but I have not found that to be the case. Wages are low for the position , I make just under $9 an hour and I've been working there part time for several years. We do not make any commission on sales and are only given raises in pay very rarely . My last one was when I temporarily stepped up to management level ( for which I did Not recieve all the training I needed for the position!) . When I was unable to do all that they required of a part time manager ( including a different availability than I was originally told Was acceptable) I stepped back down to Associate level. I did find through this Glass Door site that my " basic level managerial pay" was what I should have been making as an associate . Sometimes having to " carry" deadweight coworkers who are socializing on the clock. As in all working with the public jobs there's about 10% that you love, 80% okay most of the time people, and 10% that must have been raised by hyenas in a barn . They do not promote or advance from within the company much.

Pros

Employee discount is very generous throughout the Ascena brands. Company service & sales model is spot on with it's intentions. Merchandise is (for the most part) picked well and to current trends. You will face the day to day typical retail struggles like workload vs. payroll, poor planning and allocations, but it is not the worst I have seen. The company means well and they are adjusting to the change of the Ascena Retail family. These things take time.

Cons

The biggest problem : Company is CHEAP. The problem with this is that when you don't invest in your people, you get very little in return. I was a Store Manager who in a span of 4 years, experienced tremendous turnover with my SM peers. Unfortunately, the wrong candidates were being hired and were not set up for success. We sold high ticket fashion items that are made in third world countries for very little cost to the bottom line, but yet are very hesitant on spending $ to hire the caliber of staff that it takes to execute the LB vision flawlessly. Where is the money going LB? My guess would be that your executives are making the real green. LB has extravagant Spring & Holiday conferences for executives (DM level and above) while the store managers get a shotty, watered-down version with a DVD of the real conference and the DM gets $150 budget to feed us while we watch and discuss. $150/12 store managers. We get subway sandwich combos and some candy to eat. Ok. The stores Do not get a budget for training. Not even for holiday help. They have to work that into their store budget which means that associates and PT Keyholders learn on the job. Only FT hires receive real training $. Incentives are pathetic to say the least, as the SM gets a box of items from "Lane Shop" which is basically generic branded merchandise (like ponytail holders and key chains that say "Lane Bryant" on them) with blank certificates to fill out when we feel the need to reward our staff for exceptional performance. Come on LB, let's be real. Is a coffee mug going to motivate my team to sell credit cards? They pay most (not all) but most of their managers poor salaries to endure the typical crap-shoot Store Managers face on a daily basis. The customers have been trained by the marketing department to not even think about shopping without a coupon or "Retail Me Not," so you better make sure you have one available. Loss prevention is a huge focus, however the RLPM we had was a joke and on top of his antics, we completed 2 physical inventory cycles in 2014-2015 where results were "tossed" because the DC/Store discrepancies were so skewed, the results were deemed completely inaccurate. Very frustrating.

Pros

The Tustin location has pretty good management, actually. The associate hours seem to be based on who can get the most people to sign up for a credit card but they try to balance that with who is a skilled worker. The associate team is also pretty cool, easy to get along with. Good employee discount.

Cons

Corporate has pretty high expectations for their employees whom they pay minimum wage: -Must know all the various trouser silhouettes. -Must know all the body types. -Fit for bras -Fold everything according to company standard -Greet everyone who walks in the door -Offer a bra fit, tell them about the credit card and ADD something to the fitting room, whether the customer wants it or not. This location is very busy and we get so many complaints that we don't greet or offer bra sizes. The company is always giving us a poor grade as if they don't care how few people are working compared to the massive crowds in store on the weekends. Associates do their best to keep up with the people walking in the door. Most customers are nice but corporate needs to re-prioritize or they'll lose good people who won't put up with the ridiculous requirements. Corporate cares more about Mystery Shopper feedback than anything else, despite most shoppers not wanting to be disturbed or talked into anything while they're trying on clothes. Credit Card signups rule the roost.
