Abusive owner, insane turnover rate, awful company

Pros

Because of high turnover, they are regularly hiring. If you have no work experience, you might land your first job here. Most of the employees are very nice and capable people.

Cons

The positive reviews for this company are written by current employees who are being instructed to do so by the owner. The owner of the company is an abusive, manipulative person. He is unable to make tough decisions, has zero self awareness and no social skills, no respect for home life, and will take advantage of any situation he can to his own benefit. I worked at MANCOMM for five years, and in that time saw 92 people hired who either quit or were fired. As MANCOMM averages about 17 people at any given time, that is an insane level of turnover. In that five year period, I had five different Operations Managers. I've seen employees regularly broken down, insulted, and screamed at. I've seen a contract employee forced to renegotiate a lower contract rate while his wife was dying of cancer. I stayed because I thought I could affect positive change, but I ended up quitting with no other job lined up because I just couldn't take it anymore. Stay away from this company unless you are absolutely desperate. Aside from the abusive atmosphere, it has no real future. The company survives on two books that were first published years ago. Despite producing dozens of new products since then, the company has never achieved any level of success due to poor market analysis, no organized efforts at promotion, and going years without a sales staff (also, the owner flat-out refuses to pay commission to sales people).

Hello former Editing Manager, you walked off the job almost 2 years ago to this day, so I decided that this would be an appropriate time to respond. I must ask, why would you wait 2 years, almost 100 weeks, to say such mean and hurtful things about me? I've spent time pondering it and I have to wonder if it’s because you’re not at a comparable role to this day – I am sorry to hear that. To address your Pros: I do not hire unproven people any longer. I have learned my lessons well in the area of just settling with the status quo. I am making sure that I don’t hire anyone that is not fully proven. To address your Cons: I am an entrepreneur. I started the business with only $1,000 and it has taken persistence and determination, as a result of my passion, to create such an amazing company that now touches the lives of every American through workplace safety. Sometimes my passion, and the fact that I’m the youngest of 6, gets misinterpreted when I ask questions about how a task is being performed – hence why I now only hire proven people that are congruent with my core values. I now understand that I can find the top 20% of staff for the company. There are lots of people that love to work under passionate entrepreneurs, people that want to make a difference in the world. Just look at Wikipedia, it was completely created by people that care about making the world better, they don’t even want money, they just want to make a difference! Those are the 20% of people that I want to direct. As head of Editing, you should remember that I renegotiated all of the attorneys (contract employee) compensation on the Employer Guides because we developed a computer publishing platform that took an enormous amount of the work out of updating that product line, and it increased the quality of the product to the end user. When we purchased that product line, the attorneys were required to do a lot of redundant steps that we were able to totally eliminate because of our exceptional programming work and the development of a very unique publishing platform. You quit the day after I asked you and our Operations Manager to layoff an attorney that was reporting directly to you that had not produced any work in over 3 weeks. He admitted that he had been surfing the internet the entire time, and there was no point in continuing to pay someone that you didn't have any work for. The very next day you turned in your 2 week notice, and left after 1 week. Our Operations Manager, who’d been here for 4 years, left the same day. The company was hurting for a while, but we managed to pull everything together and we have actually improved many processes considerably. I remember and very much appreciate your dedication to the job, you would do whatever it took to get books out on time, and you would work weekends, and long hours and that’s what it took. Today, I think that you’d be happy to find out that our processes have gotten even more automated and editors don’t have to work almost any overtime. We had the processes when you were here, unfortunately you just didn't follow them. Our new Regs2Go and our Code Green projects are absolutely revolutionary in the area of compliance. The same way that we changed safety in America, we are going to change the very essence of compliance for all occupations and to quote our Vision Statement: “To make the world a better place by providing the platform for building upon intellectual property created by others.” It’s been 2 years since you've left, I’m sorry that you feel that the company would run exactly the same way. I have learned a lot about managing and mostly hiring the right people, the right people that are passionate about making the world a better place by providing value to every customer just by doing business with us. Worst job experience of my life

Pros

4% 401k match, most of the staff are nice and easy to work with

Cons

Everyone receives verbal abuse from the owner, no clear guidelines or training, disorganized management, non-existent coverage on insurance plan, and the Christmas bonus is a literal handful of change. Ben has caused several employees to break down crying in my presence due to severe verbal abuse. He has been sued in Texas for this treatment, you should be able to find that information publicly. All of the negative reviews are accurate, the positive reviews are written by then-current employees. If you have any respect for yourself, don't work here. I carried guilt with me as I stood and let Ben treat others so poorly and I regret it, don't make the same mistake.

Pros

Co-workers having to band together and form friendships out of working under abuse is the only thing that can come close to being a positive.

Cons

Owner - Ben is one of the worst human beings you will ever deal with. I have never been yelled at so much over nothing. He was so close to my face that he spit on me. Stay away at all costs. It is not worth it no matter what he is offering.

First, I want to highlight the fact that you mention coworkers banding together. That is part of our core values now, to engage in insightful cooperation with team members. While the context of the situation you describe is far from the reality of where Mancomm is today, I'm sorry you felt that you experienced any pressure. We've had a huge shift in culture and the way things are run in the past year, and we truly strive to see that every employee is living a life fulfilled. I wish you only the best in your endeavors, Ben Mangan, CEO
