Pros

As another reviewer indicated, there are no pros to working for MEMIC. I also agree that they sell themselves very well but once you get past the interview and orientation you quickly realize things are not as they appear. My manager immediately started making comments that quickly made me realize her thoughts were very different from her outward demeanor. Lastly, in concurrence with the other reviewer, do not trust management or believe the company's internal hype.

Cons

Everything, do not accept a position with this company if you are an experienced person seeking a career oriented position. They actually prefer inexperienced employees allowing them to shield themselves from any comparison with another company in the hopes that their internal hype will not be challenged. They also prefer to pay low salaries so they can return the maximum amount of premium to the client owners of this mutual company. Lastly, their systems are very difficult and cumbersome to use. They use an outdated DOS based diary system, a complex and non user friendly document system (Image Right) that does not interface with the diary system, and a vendor supplied bill paying system that is difficult to use and does not allow the adjuster the ability to process bills when necessary. As a result you are at the mercy of the bill vendor for improperly processed bills that are supposed to be paid within 30 days of receipt by Maine statute.

We appreciate constructive feedback and are doing our best to make changes that matter to all of us. There is no getting around that our staffing and employee support need to catch up to our growth – and we’re well on the way to doing so. In the last year, MEMIC has hired 65 new employees, the bulk of which are in our Claims Department. We offer on-the-job training, good benefits and pathways to career growth. We also recently completed an employee engagement survey that indicated we are measurably better as a place to work than the average insurance carrier. But we’re going to be even better. The survey is allowing us to engage all our employees in solutions that address flexibility, communications and career development. The survey results also indicated that we are far ahead of the industry as a place where people have job security and intend to stay long term.

Pros

There are no pros to working for MEMIC. They look great, sell themselves very well, but once you get inside and take a look at the organization you quickly realize that from the CEO on down this organization just doesn't "smell" right. In all honesty, Do not trust management or believe the company's internal hype.

Cons

Very egocentric. Intimidated by any person who has new ideas not in alignment with what sr. management thinks. Management is very cowardly in that they will not face you to confront, they hide behind HR. Quite frankly, I would not trust the financials. Management is very condescending. Claims management is not sympathetic to injured workers. Underwriting changes course like a dog chasing a rabbit. Loss Control lack any skills relevant to a real world business operation, but makes tries to convince you they know all.

We appreciate and solicit constructive feedback. We can say with confidence that MEMIC has been a career of long-standing for many people. As of today, 97 out of our 438 employees have been with us for 10+ years. In fact, this year MEMIC is celebrating its 25th anniversary as are 12 of our employees. This is a business of caring for people. With a strong business plan, we’ve more than doubled the people we serve from Maine to Florida in the last ten years. Our mission is to help prevent workplace injuries and support those who are injured on the job to get healthy and back to work. MEMIC is definitely a place to grow and make a difference.

Pros

Can't think of any.

Cons

Management is petty, intimidated by younger people who seem threatening with their new ideas and common sense suggestions. 60+ hour weeks are expected and gratitude and compensation for additional time is are non-existent.

We apologize for the late reply to this post but wanted to assure you that we’re listening and acting on feedback. Recently, we completed an employee engagement survey that ranked MEMIC as measurably better than the average insurance company in terms of job satisfaction, management style and culture. With a new CEO and good information in hand, we are committed to living up to our designation by ACORD as “the top workers’ compensation insurance company in the U.S.” With leadership development programs in place, career tracks, work flexibility and a focus on caring for on-the-job workers, this is a place for growth and for making a difference.
