This company heavily relies on a production to determine the good apples from the bad apples. Metrics are extremely unclear and very hard to meet. Feedback is given only once a month when it should be given daily. Coaching is essentially non-existent. I remember one month doing more policies and not meeting production. Then, the next month, I did less work and I somehow met production. Most individuals on my team skipped their breaks in order to meet production. One little distraction could put you behind on your production. And so, I could not afford to be distracted. Even for a second. Any company meetings that you attended were tracked through a time tracker along with other items. But it was such a pain to have to track your time. We were allowed to track certain items and certain items could not be tracked. It all depended upon your manager’s mood. Training was tracked through the time tracker. When a trainer physically allows you to work on an item and they are walking you though it, this counts against your production time. Which doesn’t make sense at all. You naturally are going to be slower at a task when you do not know how to do it. But if you are watching a trainer do something, you can put down the time spent watching them on your time tracker. Trainers were expected to meet production and train. Which is too much responsibility. Hence, trainers were reluctant to volunteer or simply were not in the mood to train.
This company is known to fire people if you fall short of meeting production. It does not matter if you have a learning disability (I know someone that was fired despite the fact that the company knew this person has a disability). I have even seen employees who had been with the company for years get fired because of production. We literally were given a minute to acknowledge the firing of a co-worker and then had to get back to work like ever nothing happened. We were all scared that we could be next. It felt that way every single day. I remember having to work while suffering from kidney stones. It was very hard to sit still, but I was expected to hit production. The best way to describe this company’s expectations is that you are expected to act like a robot. To perform the same way every single day no matter what.
This company only cares about the numbers, not your personal well-being. A typical day consists of working behind a computer screen to constantly push out work. There is little to interact with your team members. You simply don’t have time. My team lead did not take out the time to get to know me.
Markel has stated multiple times that they would like to hear feedback from their employees. So, they sent out surveys and asked employees for direct feedback. However, my feedback has been censored in meetings because they did not like what I had to say. My concerns were always dismissed and not a single idea of mine was ever implemented during my time at Markel. The truth is that Markel does not care what you think. They only want to hear good things about the company. Current employees have learned to stay quiet and just go along with whatever is happening at the company. They are scared to speak up for themselves. I never was scared to speak my mind.
There is a lack of accountability culture within the organization. However, managers and leadership are more than happy to point out your short comings.
The company has wonderful core values. However, they have lost their way since the pandemic. This is not the same company that I first signed up to work for.
You are required to spend 3 days in the office doing what you can do at home. If you have any kind of medical condition, they simply do not care. Inflation or a child-care issue. It doesn’t matter. You are expected to be there. If you miss an office day (for any reason), you were expected to make it up by coming to the office on a day that you were originally scheduled to work from home. Markel says the purpose of being in the office is so that we can collaborate with one another. However, we do not collaborate enough to justify being in the office. The only people who have time to collaborate are the managers and the leadership team.
The pay at Markel is not very competitive. Even when you take into account your benefits. Not to mention all the work you will be doing for the company. Before I left the company, there were no plans to adjust employee compensate to account for rising inflation.
There is an uneasiness in the air at Markel every single day. Employees do their work and hope that what they do is enough. My best advice is to avoid this company at all costs. You will be belittled and micromanaged.
If you are a current employee who plans to leave the company, be sure to download your paycheck stubs. Because when you leave the company, you will have no external access to your check stubs. The only option HR gives you after you leave the company is the option to mail out your paycheck stubs. But you must call them and go through a verification process first. HR will automatically mail you your last paycheck stub.
