An overwhelmingly negative experience

Pros

Irish-owned company, produces fun content, has brilliant creative talent who remain faithful and productive. Outwardly at least, its brand is progressive and inclusive.

Cons

So much was wrong with this company it's hard to know where to begin. The main issue was terrible management culture, which trickled from the top down. A lack of a clear plan for our wing of the business between the then-CEO and owner Niall meant constant downward pressure on management and team, leading to stress and conflict at every turn. Niall and our CEO's lack of trust in their own team made it a confrontational environment. Niall's persona was key to this, and made it by far the worst experience of my professional life. Many former staffers from my area of the business agree their time at the company caused them personal distress and even trauma afterward, such was the pressure of the job and the degree to which the owner made business performance aggressively personal. Turnover was huge, thanks to the chaos that persisted. Work-life balance was non-existent and the internal culture was the opposite of the inclusive, progressive public brand in ways I can't comfortably detail here. I'm posting this because other former employees feel the same way, and it's important to warn potential applicants that while many of MM's staff have positive stories to tell, it's been a horrible experience for more than a few people.

The House Comes Tumbling Down

Pros

Some sound people there, all battling for their lives

Cons

I'm glad to see the video doing the rounds that finally lays bare the dishonesty upon which this company was built. Staff are told to lie about performance of branded content, the business has been built off the back of click farms and lies. Clients, many with limited budgets, are being swindled out of their hard-earned money. Blatant "oh yeah, your sponsored article got 3,000 views" when it really get closer to 13 views. The media agencies are as bad for giving this business a free pass for years, because they were getting better kick-backs than from anywhere else.

Unethical and Unprofessional Chaos

Pros

Hardworking staff that churn out high volume of work.

Cons

Maximum Media is run like a fraternity house. Everything is short term driven with the sole objective to bring in as much revenue NOW at any costs. No processes, structures or procedures. It is very evident that the owner has never been exposed to a professional working environment. The office is not fit for purpose with cables laid across the floors and cold working conditions. Staff churn rate is through the roof and it is widely known that most people are looking for new roles. Niall’s ego attributes this churn to competitors poaching his staff to take the company down. The reality is that people leave because they are miserable, have no career progression paths and no one leaves unless they have something else lined up. People have been burned with promises of paid promotions not followed through, and commissions that aren’t paid out due to cash flow issues. Staff are told that they have to work late in the evening, otherwise they are not doing their roles effectively so work-life-balance is low on the agenda at Maximum. Niall is the king of self PR and constantly sends out industry releases (i.e. Irish Times) with exaggerated facts about profits, traffic figures and new hires – there was a release about 20 new roles in Galway last year which was really just an office space for Niall and 1 or 2 others for convenience. The reputation in the media industry is very poor and clients have been let down by empty promises and under delivery. It is an unethical company and I would steer clear of it if you want your career to amount to anything substantial.
