Terrible Leadership, No Strategy, but Employees Persevere

Pros

Phenomenal people to work with on a day-to-day basis, who accomplish so much despite the chaos caused by the executive team.

Cons

So much infighting on the executive team, jockeying for resources and prestige. They make exceedingly outsized salaries compared to what staff make, and they absolutely do not deliver at the level that they should for what they make. Out of the current executives, at least three should be turned out the door if the institution wants to see the kind of change and growth that it has the potential for. With the recent ousting (November 2023) of the Pres & CEO, this has only gotten worse, and somehow the head of HR seems to be coming out on top of the infighting. He is without a doubt one of the three execs that are holding the institution back. Interim Pres & CEO has openly stated to staff that he isn't really trying to be a boss...when that is exactly what the executives need--a boss to keep them in line, or to make the decision to fire a few. A zero-tolerance work from home (aka work on site or you're not working) verbal policy--leadership refuses to put many "policies" in writing--was implemented in March 2023. No updates have been given on that policy in months, so it is up to individual managers to set wfh standards for their departments, and hide that fact from leadership. Newfields has been in successive periods of crisis in my time here, much of it self-inflicted by the executive team. And yet they remain. Chaos.

Things Are Not Okay

Pros

I loved my coworkers, and I always felt like my supervisors had my back. The benefits are pretty good for full-time positions.

Cons

My department had been chronically understaffed for months, which led to increased stress all around as people had to catch the slack. Events like Harvest Nights and Winterlights are absolutely hellish for security. We didn't have enough people to cover the entire grounds to keep an eye on everything, and there were far too many people to feel comfortable during a pandemic.

Pros

Some really nice coworkers Benefits, if you chose to utilize

Cons

Pay is extremely low and raises are minimal. Lower than the cost of living and raises are lower than inflation rates. Lack of career progression. Whatever your job title is when you are hired is the title you can likely expect to keep, unless you are extremely lucky, no matter how long you've worked there. Many people are stagnant to any form of positive change. There's promises for doing better, but there's just not enough people or drive to accomplish anything campus wide. There are also many employees that create obvious roadblocks to positive change or are openly offensive. People know who they are, yet there is no accountability. There are lots of promises thrown around, yet no action. Overall, pretty toxic environment to be in. Poor management, partially because there is no CEO currently.
