Pros

a startup biotech that encouraged personal growth for first time industry experience Sometimes there would be an occasional pizza party and social events in pre-pandemic times A lot of promising scientific programs with many side programs Company shutdown week, end of December You learn a lot of good science Some good people at the company who care a lot about you as an individual

Cons

Management loves to micromanage and it is becoming more demanding with weekly meetings/updates Work culture: no culture, just work...no work/life balance...work weekends and holidays when needed Sub-par benefit package Treated not as a human by upper management but as a piece of equipment for generating data High turnover rates... One essential worker works 3 job descriptions. Scientists work on several other programs and there is high pressure to meet deadlines Lack of empathy for employees...lack of COVID-19 safety protocols in the beginning of the pandemic Lack of professionalism from certain employees

Pros

You will get the most value for your career if you are and entry level STEM graduate. The small size of the company, flexible organization structure along with slower production cadence allows you plenty of opportunities to develop and gain exposure to different functional areas. Cross functional shadowing is common. Work life balance is great. There are some extremely talented individuals that work here.

Cons

They hire talented individuals with diverse experiences from industry. But the talent is sometimes wasted because some directors reject input from the team members without explanation. This indicates that decisions are not always strategic and sometimes based on personal preferences/feeling. They also will not bother explaining their reasoning and strategy to the team even when asked and take a dismissive approach. Some of these leaders provide no clear direction or vision as to what good looks like. This environment is not conducive to innovation in or retaining high performing team members. Not very inclusive. gossip happening openly even at team meetings, sometimes initiated by a director. NextCure values respect and inclusion, However little oversight into different departments allows some directors to propagate sub cultures that are not conducive to a respectful and inclusive company culture.
